In search of YouTube's copyrighted music muter

This morning, Mashable's Stan Schroeder discovered some examples of independently submitted videos to YouTube where the music track has been muted, and a notice given to that effect. Apparently, the system Google has long promised for identifying music tracks by their signatures, is working.

But is it working everywhere? Schroeder's examples include a track of mainly music, with just an accompanying slide, by blues great Albert King, apparently "ripped" off of one of those big, spinning, vinyl things folks used to use for music. People do like to post music to YouTube for some reason, even if it's only accompanying a slide telling you what the music is. We went looking for other examples of copyrighted tracks to test the depth of its detection ability.

  • The old NBA on NBC theme by John Tesh. While the NBA is no longer on NBC, you know the theme is still copyrighted because Tesh still plays it in concerts. For some unknown reason, you can find it on YouTube with or without accompanying video, certainly not posted by Tesh. And no, it's not muted yet.
  • A LeeAnn Rimes music video, apparently not posted by her label, in pretty good quality. No mutes.
  • A video with the music and lyrics of David Archuleta's "Crush." Now, this is important, because Archuleta's music video also appears on YouTube in the singer's own official channel. But this is a fan's separate posting. No mutes.
  • A remastered version of a Benny Goodman Orchestra rendition of "Sing, Sing, Sing," which is one of his signature pieces. Like the Albert King video, it's someone's video slide show set to the existing music track. No mutes.
  • A duet featuring cellist Yo Yo Ma and vocalist Bobby McFerrin, playing "Ave Maria." Again, it's just a slide with the title, accompanying the original recording. No mutes.

We're 0 for 5 so far on tracks we selected at random, looking for the YouTube muting notice. We'll let you know if we happen to find one later on.
