Dell unveils new Windows 10 Inspiron laptops, including world's first 17-inch 2-in-1
Computex 2016 is in full-effect, and news from the event is coming fast and furiously. Windows 10 laptops are a big part of the announcements, and consumers have a lot to be happy about. Not only are many of the new machines thin and beautiful, but powerful too. Windows OEMs are finally understanding the wants of consumers, and delivering the notebooks they have long desired.
Today, Dell announces its new line of Inspiron laptops, and they look fabulous. Featuring Skylake processors and multiple chassis color options, consumers should be able to find a machine that both meets their needs and is uniquely them. The manufacturer has even produced what it calls the world's first 17-inch 2-in-1 laptop.
"The new 15- and 17-inch Inspiron 5000 Series laptops are beautifully designed, versatile machines that come with an array of processor options for fast, responsive performance. Featuring a vibrant display, they are perfect for families who share a PC and for consumers interested in personal use such as entertainment. The optional infrared camera (available on the 15-inch FHD touch Intel/AMD models) with the Windows Hello feature allows users to log in with a look at the camera, providing extra security and convenience. For scalability and storage, an optical DVD drive and optional Blu-ray writer (not available on the 17-inch AMD model) may be added, ideal for backing up photos, videos and data. Exceptionally stylish and attractive with a glossy, colorful finish, customers can choose from several brilliant colors including Midnight Blue, Bali Blue and Tango Red, coming soon", says Dell of it non-convertible laptops.
Speaking of the convertible 5000 series of Inspiron, the company says, "the infrared camera option works with Windows Hello facial recognition so users can easily log in with just a look, and a backlit keyboard option makes working in dim environments more pleasant. Available SSDs provide longer battery life, quicker responsiveness and improved shock resistance as compared to conventional rotational HDDs. The 13-inch 2-in-1’s compact size and light weight make it ideal for everyday travel, and the 15-inch 2-in-1 has 40-percent more screen room than the 13-inch making it well suited to working on multiple projects or enjoying movies with friends and family. Inspiron 5000 2-in-1s offer FHD display for 13 inch and 15 inch with (1920x1080) True-life LED-Backlit Touch Display, and up to 16GB of dual channel DDR4 memory -- perfect for multi-taskers who switch between open applications".
The stars of the show, however, are the 2-in-1 7000 series, which are available with 13, 15, and 17-inch displays with 1080p standard. Yes, you are reading that correctly -- a convertible laptop with a monstrous 17-inch screen. While I give Dell a thumbs-up for being so daring, I am dubious that consumers will want to hold such a huge laptop as a tablet. Quite frankly, I find 15 inch 2-in-1 machines to be a bit unwieldy, buy hey, at least consumers can make that decision. Choice is good here.
These 7000 series laptops feature Intel Skylake core processors, making them quite capable for all tasks. The aluminum chassis should offer a touch of elegance; something plastic can't really deliver. Of course, they feature the latest range in USB technology, Type-C, which offers easy connectivity to battery packs and single-cable docks.
For those who want something smaller, Dell is offering new 3000 series 11-inch laptops (seen at top). These offer a slightly disappointing resolution of 1366x768, which should prove passable on the small display. These too feature Intel Skylake chips, likely Core M. Best of all? The starting price is a very low $249! The small size and budget-focus should make them ideal for college students that want to travel light.
