Windows 10 Anniversary Update to bring Enterprise-specific Edge management policies

To keep enterprise users happy, Windows 10 includes both Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer may be included for legacy support, but just like non-enterprise customers, Microsoft is keen to get everyone shifted across to Edge or at least ensure the two browsers work well together.

To help encourage this migration, Windows 10 Anniversary Update brings support for a number of new management policies in Microsoft's newest browser. There's a clear need to continue to support legacy line of business (LOB) applications, but Microsoft also wants to make management as easy as possible.

Microsoft has already introduced a number of scenario-base management policies, and the ones that are available to administrators is dependent on which Windows 10 build is installed; version 1511 and newer includes the option to enable InPrivate Browsing, and to prevent users bypassing SmartScreen prompts.

But it's what's coming up that admins will be most interested in. Microsoft says changes have been made in response to user feedback:

We have added support for the following new Microsoft Edge management policies as a part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update:

  • Allow access to the about:flags page
  • Allow usage of extensions
  • Configure WebRTC media port ranges
  • Show a transitional message when opening Internet Explorer sites

The Anniversary Update also includes the option to prevent users on domain-joined devices from overriding home page settings, and the User and Machine policy hives are now used to house Group Policy settings on the desktop.

Full details of the policies available in Microsoft Edge can be found over on TechNet.
