Secure your Twitter account with two-factor authentication
There are not many well-known online services that don't offer two-factor authentication (2FA) nowadays, but Twitter is very late to the party. Well, that might not be strictly true. Twitter recently added support for third-party authenticator apps, but failed to make any sort of song and dance about it.
The change means that it's now possible to make use of the likes of Google Authenticator and Authy with Twitter -- but you'd be forgiven for not having found the option by accident already.
If you like the idea of enabling two-factor authentication for your Twitter account, you can take this step and secure your account. Start off by ensuring that you have Google Authenticator or Authy installed and that you've set yourself up with an account. You'll then need to visit the Twitter website on your computer.
- Click your profile picture to the upper right of the screen select Settings and privacy.
- In the Account section, look for the Security heading, and check the box labeled Verify login requests.
- Click the Start button in the popup that appears, enter your password when prompted, and click Verify.
- Make sure that your mobile number is correctly entered -- if not, head back to your account settings and make the necessary adjustments -- and click Send code.
- With your phone verified, click the Setup a code generator app button and then scan the QR code that's generated using your phone.
