Amazon announces faster Fire HD 10 tablet with improved battery, 1080p display and a lower price

It has been a while since Amazon launched a new Fire tablet, but today the online retailer has unveiled the all-new Fire HD 10. The processors, battery and screen have all been upgraded, but the starting price has been slashed to just $149.99 (or £149.99).

The screen is a 10.1-inch 1080p affair offering 224 ppi, and the tablet's processor has been upgraded to a quad-core chip, boosting the speed by up to 30 percent. Amazon claims the battery will last for up to 10 hours, and the addition of stereo Dolby Atmos Audio speakers has the sound side of things covered. The company also claims that the Fire HD is "more durable than the latest iPad Pro 10.5” (and costs a lot less too)."

Available in 32GB and 64GB models, the Fire HD 10 includes Alexa hands-free, and storage can be expanded by up to 256GB with a microSD card. Amazon has focused on performance here, doubling the RAM and adding two 1.8 GHz cores and two 1.4 GHz cores -- perhaps not the speediest on the market, but a marked improvement.

The tablet also includes a new For You feature which Amazon explains:

Fire HD 10 also includes For You, a new personalized page on the tablet home screen that makes it easy for customers to quickly get back to reading, watching, playing or listening -- and to quickly find what's next. For You learns what a customer loves to do on the tablet, and then presents personalized recommendations across a variety of entertainment categories like books, videos, songs, and apps to help customers get the most out of their device. Customers can also quickly access family photos from Prime Photos and see their local weather right from the For You home screen. The new For You page is also now available for customers on previous generation Fire tablets.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is available to pre-order now, and it will ship starting October 11 (US link and UK link). The 32GB model costs $149.99/£149.99, and the 64GB version costs $189.99/£179.99
