Evernote update offers different new features for Mac and Windows versions

EvernoteThe Evernote Corporation has released a major update for both Mac and Windows clients of its online note-taking tool, Evernote. Evernote 4.4 (Windows) and 2.20 (Mac) includes a major new feature called Note Links, which allows users to create links to any specific note that can subsequently be placed just about anywhere else: notes, calendars, to-do lists, documents and even other apps.

Other new features in the latest update include an option for copying notes between notebooks, a brand new "snippets" view, plus the addition of forward and back buttons to the Note History browser. In addition to this there are several features exclusive to Windows and Mac versions of the software.

The new Note Links feature, which works with multiple notes as well as single ones, enables users to place links to individual notes anywhere they choose. Links can be pasted into a calendar app for example to provide a timely reminder that a particular note needs attention.

The latest version of Evernote also includes a brand new Note menu to handle all the new note-related features.

The other major new feature worthy of note is the "Snippets" View, which is available in Mixed View, and provides a short précis of each note courtesy of a few lines of text from the note and -- if present -- a thumbnail of any attached image.

Platform-specific improvements

Evernote 4.4 for Windows also includes a new option for exporting notes as multiple web pages, complete with a table of contents in HTML format, effectively letting you export your notes as a standalone website.

Windows users can now also drag and drop both text and images from inside a note into another note or even on to the desktop. There is also improved handling of text styles and an option to disable PDF preview, so only an attachment icon is displayed instead.

Evernote 2.20 for Mac has only one noteworthy improvement: better compatibility with Apple's VoiceOver accessibility features.

Evernote 4.4/2.20 is available as a free download for Windows and Mac users.
