Save everything with Redo Backup and Recovery 1.0

Redo Backup and Recovery

We all know how important backing up your hard drive is. Whether you're backing up a clutch of files and settings, or want a complete backup of the entire hard drive, there are solutions a-plenty to choose from. But while you may have given a lot of thought to backing up your computer, have you ever considered what you'll do if the worst comes to pass and you need to restore that data?

What you need is a tool that doesn't rely on you being able to load your operating system before it allows you to get at your data. And if it's free, well so much the better! The good news is that you can have your cake and eat it, with the aid of Redo Backup and Recovery, which has just enjoyed its first stable release (1.0) after a lengthy period in beta.

Redo Backup and Recovery is a drive-imaging tool, which means it takes an exact replica of your entire hard drive (or selected partitions) as opposed to a collection of files and folders. It works in a different way to most backup tools: you actually download the file, which is in ISO format to your hard drive, and then burn this to a blank CD or DVD. You can then pop the disc into the optical drive, restart your computer, and Redo Backup and Recovery loads direct from the disc, no operating system required.

When it comes to burning the ISO file to disc, you need to take a different approach to the usual burning process. Windows 7 users can simply double-click the downloaded ISO file and click "Burn" to convert it into a fully functioning disc; other Windows users will need the help of third-party disc-burning software, or a dedicated tool like ISO Workshop, while Linux users should investigate the cd record program.

With the disc thus burned, reboot your computer and you'll soon find yourself armed with all the tools you need to backup and restore your hard drive, plus recover deleted files, partition your hard drive and even browse the internet. It's your one-stop shop for backup, file recovery and troubleshooting.

Redo Backup and Recovery 1.0 is available now as an open-source free download for Windows and Linux.
