Ahead of VMworld, a flurry of VMware-optimized hardware from Dell and HP arrives
Just five days ahead of VMware's annual VMworld convention in San Francisco, a host of new hardware specifically designed to work with VMware's virtualization software was announced, including new products and designs from Dell Wyse, HP, and Hitachi.
Dell, which has been making a fierce charge into virtualized and cloud solutions revealed its new VMware-optimized hardware on Tuesday. This includes two new PCoIP zero clients under the five-month old Dell Wyse brand. The Dell Wyse P25 supports dual displays, and the P45 supports four displays.
These PCoIP zero clients are based on Teradici's Tera2321 and Tera2140 PCoIP processors, and are designed specifically for use in a VMware View environment on graphics-intensive design, modeling and rendering applications. These models are designed for high energy efficiency, and the dual-display models, according to Teradici, come in at under 6W of total system power.
The Texas company also announced the new EqualLogic PS6500ES and PS6510ES storage arrays for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), data warehousing, or online transactional databases. Each array can host up to 85 terabytes and up to two petabytes per Dell EqualLogic group, which can be centrally managed and provisioned by VMware vCenter in HIT/VMware 3.5.
Dell also announced three new desktop virtualization reference architectures and a tool called Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions for Government to help public sector IT meet federal security and compliance standards.
HP, meanwhile, announced its own VMware virtual desktop-optimized hardware, including the HP t130 and t410 Zero Clients.
Like Dell's new products the HP t130 is also built on Teradici's Tera2 platform and is a thin client designed specifically for VMware View. The t410, which is built more as an all-in-one terminal, is powered by a Texas Instruments ARM Cortex A8 (single core 1 GHz, 256 KB L2 cache) processor, giving it slightly more power, but also increasing its energy profile.
Last week, Teradici launched OEM availability of its Tera2 processor family, and in addition to Dell and HP; Samsung and LG announced support for the platform and are expected to show off new products at VMworld based upon it.
