Netflix now lets you watch your favorite movies and TV shows offline

Many people stream their favorite movies and TV shows today through Netflix. The service, which boasts around 86 million subscribers, is available on all the major platforms, making it easy for users to enjoy it pretty much everywhere and on every PC, smartphone and tablet. That is, as long as there is a working Internet connection.

That changes today, as Netflix announces that it is also making its content available offline. Users are now able to download movies and TV shows and watch them while, for instance, traveling on an airplane or in a remote area. Here is what you need to know.

First off, the option to have content available offline does not incur any additional costs. Netflix says that all that users need to do to take advantage of this new feature is to tap on the download button that is on the details page of a movie or TV show.

Not all content is available to watch offline, however. "Many of your favorite streaming series and movies are already available for download, with more on the way, so there is plenty of content available for those times when you are offline. For example, Orange is The New Black, Narcos and The Crown are available for download today", Netflix explains.

The feature is being made available through the Netflix apps for Android and iOS. There is no word whether it will also be offered on other platforms, but the service does say that it is enabled on all plans and smartphones and tablets running the two aforementioned mobile operating systems.

Obviously, if you want to take proper advantage of the offline support that Netflix just announced, you will have to make sure that all your downloads finish while your device is still connected to the Internet.

That can take a bit of time, depending on how much content you want to watch, but suffice it to say that you should start the download as soon as possible before boarding a plane or heading somewhere where there's no Wi-Fi or cellular coverage.
