Amazon Prime Air makes first drone delivery to a customer
Amazon is my favorite store. I don't just mean online either -- there is nowhere I'd rather shop, including brick-and-mortar retailers too. This is not just because of convenience either -- it has great product selection and competitive prices too. As a Prime member, I can even get my packages in two business days at no additional cost!
While I am totally satisfied waiting two days for my stuff, apparently some people aren't. Using drone technology, Amazon recently (December 7, 2016) delivered a package in a mere 13 minutes! This was the first-ever customer delivery using an Amazon Prime Air drone. Today, the company releases a video of the historic delivery, and it is pretty darn cool.
The customer (Richard B.) lives in England -- this is where Amazon's drone testing has been going on. What did this gentleman order? An Amazon product, of course -- the Fire TV. To accompany his new movie-playing media box, he also ordered a bag of popcorn. The retailer promises drone deliveries in 30 minutes or less, and that pledge was successful -- it made the delivery in 13 minutes.
What's interesting is that Richard's house is sort of remote, and the package was not delivered to his doorstep. Actually, it was dropped off a bit of a walk from his front door. This home was likely chosen for its lack of neighbors, as it minimizes potential injuries. Also, delivering a small distance from the home likely prevents potential damage to the house too. Clearly this was a very controlled experiment.
What do you think of this initial Amazon drone delivery? Is it a cool breakthrough or should people just learn to be patient? Watch the video below and please tell me in the comments.
