TCL 10 5G UW is an affordable next-gen Verizon Android smartphone

TCL-10-5G-UW_VZW_Dark-Gray_Front-Left

5G is no longer the future -- it is the present. There are plenty of phones with 5G radios (including the new iPhone 12 series), and all major cell providers offer this next generation of connectivity. The thing is, not all 5G is created equally. For instance, T-Mobile offers the best 5G coverage, while Verizon's ultra wideband is the fastest. Unfortunately, when it comes to the latter, it can be hard to find an UW tower. So while Verizon has the best speed, it can be hard to achieve it.

With all of that said, Verizon has some hardcore fans that swear by its service, and if that is you, you are probably itching to get a new 5G ultra wideband phone. Sure, you could go with an iPhone 12, but Apple's offerings are quite pricey. Thankfully, up-and-coming phone-maker TCL has a new smartphone that works with Verizon's 5G and is very affordable.

pnlxlr81

For those of you that build your own desktop computers, you know damn well that brands matter. For instance, if you opt for an unknown company for your RAM, power supply, or storage, there is a very good chance you will run into problems. This is why I always recommend sticking with reputable brands -- saving a few bucks is never worth it if you end up troubleshooting crashes.

PNY is a company that has been around for a long time, and its products are generally very reliable. Today, it launches a beautiful new memory product that enthusiasts and gamers should both absolutely love. Called "XLR8 Gaming EPIC-X RGB," it is a 16GB kit (8GB x2) of DDR4 RAM that can run at 3600MHz. As the product name implies, the sticks also feature RGB lighting so your PC can look super rad.

System76's Pop!_OS 20.10 Ubuntu-based Linux distro now available for download

Excited_Woman_Lady_Glasses_Keyboard_Excited_Smile

Just yesterday, we told you Ubuntu 20.10 was finally available for download. This was exciting, as it is the most well-known Linux-based desktop operating system on the planet (other than Chrome OS, maybe).

Of course, having the most recognizable name does not make Ubuntu the best Linux distro. In fact, I can confidently say it is definitely not the best. And that is because Pop!_OS exists.

SanDisk Ixpand Wireless Charger Sync creates local backups while charging

iXpand_Wireless_Charger

If you are like me, you charge your smartphone every night before bed. While some people still use old-school charging cables, many others -- including yours truly -- use a Qi wireless charger instead. I prefer this more modern option, as I can just drop my phone on the charging pad when I am exhausted -- no need to fiddle with plugging something in like a caveman.

Most Qi wireless chargers are pretty much all the same these days, but now, SanDisk has a new model that offers an incredibly useful feature. Called "Ixpand Wireless Charger Sync," the charging pad contains flash storage that allows the phone to automatically back up files locally while charging. How insanely cool is that?

Ubuntu Linux 20.10 'Groovy Gorilla' is here with renewed Raspberry Pi focus

ubuntu2010gorilla

There are many Linux-based desktop operating systems these days. Some of them are great, while others range from mediocre to downright bad and unnecessary. When a new version of a Linux distro comes out, the Linux community takes notice, but largely, the world doesn't pay it any mind. That is, of course, unless it is Ubuntu.

Yes, Canonical's Ubuntu is undoubtedly the most well-known desktop Linux-based operating system, and when a new version becomes available, it is a very big deal -- even in the mainstream. This is despite that there is no real surprise in each release announcement -- they come twice a year, in April and October.

1Password for Linux Beta now available on Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, Fedora, and more

1password-linux

Back in August, we told you about some very exciting news -- 1Password had come to Linux... as a development preview. Yeah, it was a pre-beta release, but still, it was a huge win for the Linux community overall.

1Password is an extremely popular password management service, available for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS/iPadOS. Bringing it to Linux makes the software truly cross-platform. Not to mention, it says a lot about the growing popularity of Linux that Agilebits found it beneficial to assign precious resources to its development.

Acer-Chromebook-Spin-513-CP513-1HL-High_02

Many people said it was impossible to bring desktop Linux to the mainstream, but guess what? Google did it. Yup, thanks to Chrome OS, there are countless people running Linux as their main desktop operating system every day. This is for home use, education, and business. During the pandemic, Chromebooks have been so popular that it can be hard to find one at a reasonable price.

Acer has long been a proponent of Chrome OS, and today, the much-respected company unveils two new machines -- the Chromebook Spin 513 laptop and Chromebox CXI4 desktop. The Spin 513 is a convertible, meaning it can pull double-duty as a tablet when folded. Since Chrome OS supports Android apps and Google Play, it is a very good tablet experience too. It is powered by an ARM processor, which seems to be the future of computing.

StarTech.com launches DK30C2DPEP hybrid docking station with 100W PD

dk30c2dpep.c

Thunderbolt 3 docking stations are really cool, but there is a big problem with them -- most computers don't have TB3! Unfortunately, manufacturers typically only put Thunderbolt 3 in premium laptops, with budget and mid-range computers often left out of the party.

Thankfully, USB is ubiquitous, and there are docking stations that are compatible with it. Most new docks, however, are designed for USB-C. So what do you do if you want a fancy new docking station but only have USB-A? Well, StarTech.com has a new product that answers that question. Called "DK30C2DPEP," it is a hybrid docking station that works with both USB-A and USB-C computers. This is achieved by supplying a USB-C to USB-C cable that has a USB-A adapter attached.

Google Photos makes it easier to get printed photographs from your library

google-photos-print

One of the best things about modern smartphones, is that they pretty much all have excellent cameras. This means you can take a high-quality photograph at any time by merely pulling the phone out of your pocket. Thanks to cloud storage, your photos can be safely backed up without effort too, so you never have to worry about losing them.

As someone who lost their home in a fire once, I prefer everything to be digital and in the cloud. Things I owned like like music CDs, books, and photographs were lost forever. Nowadays, all of that media is safe and secure online. I would never bother putting photographs in a photo album either -- I'd rather view them on my iPad or Android tablet.

System76 Thelio Mega is a quad-GPU Linux desktop powered by Ryzen Threadripper

thelio-mega-2

System76 began its life as a Linux computer seller only. Essentially, the company would sell re-branded laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed. To provide a class-leading experience, however, System76 also provided top-notch customer service, helping Linux beginners get started with a little hand-holding when needed. This focus on service continues today, and it is largely responsible for the company's success and longevity.

Seeking to better control its own destiny, the company branched out from only being a computer-seller and transformed into a maker too. It's handcrafted Thelio desktops are powerful works of art, comprised of wood, metal, and good ol' fashioned American elbow grease. Yes, these Thelio machines are made in the USA -- Colorado, specifically.

Minisforum EliteMini H31G Windows 10 and Linux PC impressions

minisforum

For whatever reason, I absolutely adore diminutive desktop computers. From the Apple Mac mini to the Intel NUC series, I am always fascinated by how much power can be crammed into a small form factor. Quite frankly, it is fun to have a tiny PC next to a big monitor and have friends and family marvel at the cuteness.

So when a new mini computer from Minisforum caught my eye, I knew I had to give it a go. Called "EliteMini H31G," it is a bit bigger than a traditional Intel NUC, but that is OK, as it is packing something special -- discreet NVIDIA graphics partnered with a 9th generation Intel Core processor. In other words, this little beast can handle gaming and video editing.

ADATA announces ultra-compact IM2P3014 M.2 2242 NVMe PCIe Gen3x2 SSD

IM2P3014-

When you buy an NVMe PCIe SSD these days, it is probably going to be the 2280 form factor. That seems to be the most popular length, and for the most part, it can fit into most computers with M.2 slots. With that said, there are devices that require a smaller M.2 drive due to limitations.

The shorter 2242 form factor is rather rare, though not unheard of, and ADATA has a new ultra-compact solid state drive at that length. Called "IM2P3014," the stubby M.2 2242 NVMe PCIe Gen3x2 SSD is intended for industrial applications, but it can, of course, be used in pretty much any computer with an M.2 slot and a mounting hole for 2242 SSDs. In fact, this drive could be an absolute godsend for those that need that form factor.

How to install Microsoft Windows Calculator on Linux

WinCalcLinux

Microsoft is no longer an enemy of the Linux or Open Source communities. Believe it or not, the Windows-maker is an ally these days. Shocking, I know, but totally true. Linux is now built into Windows thanks to WSL, and Microsoft has several apps available for Linux.

The company has even made some of its apps open source as well. For instance, back in 2019, Microsoft released the source for Windows Calculator on GitHub. And now, that calculator app has been ported to Linux by Uno Platform. Best of all, its insanely easy to install as it is packaged in Snap format.

Logitech launches affordable Z407 Bluetooth 2.1 computer speakers

logispeakers2020

The speakers that are built into laptops or integrated into computer monitors have gotten much better over the years, but make no mistake, they still don't provide an optimal audio experience. Whether you are watching movies or listening to music, investing in superior speakers will certainly make your life much more enjoyable.

The great thing is, solid computer speakers don't have to break the bank either. Today, Logitech launches the Z407 Bluetooth 2.1 computer speaker system, and it is priced well under $100. What makes these particularly cool is that the two satellite speakers can be positioned horizontally or vertically, making them fit well on almost any desk.

Samsung launches PRO Plus and EVO Plus SD Cards

Samsung-Full-Sized-SD-Cards-All2

A digital camera without a storage card is like a car without gas -- pretty much useless. You need a memory card to store the photos and videos you take, and most cameras don't come with any onboard storage these days.

There are no shortage of SD cards (Amazon is littered with them), but you should always make sure you are purchasing one made by a reputable company. Don't recognize the brand? Don't buy it. You don't want to lose your valuable data when that cheap card dies prematurely.
