Almost a third of IT assets lack some security controls

New research shows that nearly 30 percent of enterprise IT assets are missing at least one critical security control, such as endpoint security or patch management.
The study from Sevco Security also shows more than six percent of all IT assets have reached the end-of-life stage, creating instances of known-but-unpatched vulnerabilities.
IT teams struggle to get visibility into tech assets

A new report into IT asset management (ITAM) shows that 53 percent of IT teams report challenges gaining or maintaining complete visibility of their technology investments.
The study from Flexera also finds nearly a quarter (22 percent) of the global IT leaders surveyed say they have paid more than $5 million in audit costs over the past three years, up from 15 percent in 2023.
Enterprises struggle to make informed decisions on IT sourcing

Businesses are keen to adopt new technologies in their quest for digital transformation but often face a maze of biased information and incomplete data that hampers the decision making process.
A new report from request for proposal (RFP) specialist Olive Technologies looks at trends and requirements from real-world RFPs, managed through the Olive platform, to help organizations make data-driven, unbiased decisions when selecting IT solutions.
Nearly half of enterprises face increased cost due to poor IT asset data

Around half of organizations have experienced a significant increase in their audit budget expenditures due to poor IT asset inventory data.
Research carried out by YouGov for Oomnitza shows 56 percent of companies report that the data accuracy of their configuration management database (CMDB) is only 85 percent or less with insufficient levels of process automation.
Around a third of enterprise software spend is wasted

Despite significant efforts to become more efficient with IT budgets, respondents to a new survey report underutilization or wasted IT spending of 36 percent for desktop software, 33 percent for data center software, 32 percent for SaaS and 32 percent for IaaS/PaaS.
The study into IT asset management (ITAM) from Flexera shows that software asset management (SAM) programs are saving enterprises tens of millions of dollars. 55 percent of respondents say they saved more than $1 million, and 16 percent claim SAM programs saved more than $10 million in the past year.
Threat intelligence is a priority but organizations lack network visibility

New research from asset visibility and security company Armis shows threat intelligence has become a top priority, yet organizations don't have a clear view of their networks.
The study of 400 IT professionals across the UK shows the top challenges they faced in the last six months as: keeping up with threat intelligence, compliance with cybersecurity regulations and frameworks, staffing and recruitment, an ever expanding attack surface, and visibility into all assets connected to the network.
How an IT asset checklist can set up CISOs for success [Q&A]

The Great Resignation and tech layoffs have pushed staff turnover to an all-time high. And with every personnel change, years of institutional knowledge are lost in the transition. That information can be critically important for security executives, like CISOs, who must be the ultimate stewards of organizational security across an ever-changing attack surface.
Organizational environments today are increasingly complex and constantly evolving, making it challenging to understand exactly what is at risk at any given moment. For CISOs joining an organization, it is vital to understand exactly what is on their environment to effectively secure it.
Businesses waste $17 million a year on unused SaaS apps

A new report from enterprise SaaS management firm Zylo finds that on average, 44 percent of businesses' SaaS licenses are wasted or underutilized, and the average organization wastes $17M in unused SaaS licenses every year.
Enterprise organizations (those with 10,000 employees or more) spend over $224M annually on SaaS but only utilize 50 percent of their SaaS licenses
New solution helps enterprises manage cloud assets

As organizations turn increasingly to the cloud they face the challenge of understanding not just the cost but also the value of their operation.
To help organizations maximize business value from their technology investments, Flexera is launching a new solution that strengthens an enterprise's FinOps and cloud central teams, while allowing the convergence of IT asset management (ITAM) and FinOps.
Asset management and security -- how to secure your whole tech stack

In a tumultuous geopolitical environment, organizations use digital transformation initiatives to accelerate and maintain their productivity. Companies want IT to increase innovation and improve the efficiency of processes across their business. At the same time, IT leaders are under mounting pressure to gain full visibility of their infrastructure. This pressure stems from the need to minimize or mitigate the risk of any disruption that could directly impact customers, shareholders and employee data.
Without a clear understanding of where your tech stack sits today, those future goals will forever be out of reach. Whether you are a brand new CIO taking on IT responsibility for the first time, or a seasoned CIO with years of experience, being able to go between the big picture and the nuanced details is a necessary skill to develop.
Rise in unmanaged devices increases risk

Unmanaged device usage continues to increase, with only 43 percent of respondents to a new survey claiming to be actively monitoring 75 percent or more of their endpoints. For organizations with 1,000-4,999 devices, 34 percent are unmanaged, and more than half report experiencing several cyberattacks as a result of poorly managed endpoint devices.
The study, from Syxsense, of more than 380 IT and cybersecurity professionals shows that despite these blind spots most survey respondents believe endpoint security (56 percent) and management (58 percent) are getting easier compared to two years ago.
Lack of visibility is the biggest challenge for cybersecurity teams

New research from Sevco Security shows that more than 10 percent of enterprise IT assets are missing endpoint protection, and that roughly five percent are not covered by enterprise patch management solutions.
Nearly 20 percent of Windows servers lack endpoint protection, far more than Windows clients and MacOS assets, which are just over 10 percent.
Asset visibility is a major challenge for security professionals

A new study of over 100 security professionals, carried out by unified asset intelligence platform Armis, shows almost 40 percent say asset visibility is the biggest challenge facing their organizations.
A quarter say poor asset visibility is the biggest risk and over half (54 percent) of respondents say employee behavior is a top risk.
Why poor IT asset lifecycle management is rapidly becoming a serious cyber vulnerability

Earlier this year, banking giant Morgan Stanley agreed to pay plaintiffs $60 million to settle a class-action lawsuit resulting from a pair of data breaches discovered in 2019.
While companies like Morgan Stanley find themselves under constant cyber attacks, these breaches were not from a hacker breaking into a database or an employee accidentally exposing customer information. It was simpler: Morgan Stanley threw away decommissioned servers that were not completely wiped clean, leaving customers’ personally identifiable information vulnerable.
