India still wants RIM to open a backdoor to BlackBerry security
For several months, Indian security officials have wanted Research in Motion to decrypt BlackBerry-delivered e-mails so the government may have access to them, should the need arise. Both sides could reach a solution as soon as tomorrow.
In short, the Indian government believes BlackBerry communication is too secure, and could allow subversives a safe, untraceable method of communication unless something gets changed.
Tomorrow, there will reportedly be a meeting between government officials and RIM representatives to hopefully reveal the solution to this conundrum.
Thus far, RIM has failed to acquiesce to any of the Indian Ministry of Telecommunications suggestions, which included the relocation of BlackBerry servers to India.
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone-controlled Vodafone Essar, and BPL Mobile all offer BlackBerry services in India. A report earlier this month estimated 114,000 subscribers there.
