MWC 2017: Huawei unveils P10 and P10 Plus

Today at MWC 2017, Huawei lifted the lid on its new P10 range. As with their predecessors, the Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus have a strong focus on photography, with the Leica brand being used as a draw.

As is the norm these days, there are no huge surprises to be found here, with the latest flagships being really little more than an evolution of last year's models -- not that that's a bad thing of course. In addition to the cameras, standout features for this year's handsets include a serious boost to battery life, and a front-mounted (hooray!) fingerprint sensor, complete with gesture support.

The unibody design that Huawei is famed for is still present, but there's a slightly glossier finish this time around. Design is important to Huawei, and as such it should come as no surprise that there is no camera bump on the rear, but the staggering choice of eight colors (Dazzling Blue, Graphite Black, Dazzling Gold, Rose Gold, Greenery, White Ceramic, Mystic Silver and Prestige Gold) is rather more astonishing.

The P10 has a 1080p 5.1" screen, and this jumps to a 5.5" 2560x1440 display for the P10 Plus. This is by far the biggest difference between the two handsets, but the P10 also features a larger battery (3750mAh compared to 3200mAh). Both models have dual rear cameras (one 20MP monochrome, one 12MP RGB), but the front-facers are different: the P10 has an 8MP f/2.2 model, while the P10 Plus has an 8MP f/1.8. There's an interesting-sounding adaptive selfie mode which will adjust the angle of a shot depending on the number of people detected in the frame.

Both models have a 2.4GHz octa-core Hisilicon Kirin 960 processor, backed up by a Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The P10 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and this increases to 6GB and 128GB for the P10 Plus. Both support microSD cards up to 256GB, feature a USB Type-C port, and run Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.1 slapped on the top.

If you're in the US and hoping to get your hands on one of these phones, it seems like you're out of luck. Huawei is planning to release the P10 and P10 Plus in Australia, Austria, Chile, China, Columbia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

Pricing will be €650 for the P10, €700 for the 64GB P10 Plus, and €800 for the 128GB P10 Plus, and the launch is in March.
