Windows 10 Creators Update will offer users 'more choice and control' -- and fewer update reboots

Choice

Windows 10 Creators Update is expected to launch in April, and will deliver a wealth of new features and improvements. While a lot of the focus is on 3D creation, gaming enhancements, and security, Microsoft has also made a lot of welcome changes to the user experience.

Michael Fortin, CVP of Windows and Devices Group Core Quality, reveals today that the Creators Update will give users much greater control over privacy, security, and updates.

In a new blog post, Fortin explains that in addition to having greater control over when updates are installed, they will have less impact on device performance while being installed, and users can expect fewer reboots afterwards, which is always welcome news.

John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, goes into further details later in the same post, and while he doesn’t mention the hidden update controls I wrote about earlier, he does say:

With the Creators Update you will have several new options for scheduling the timing of when updates install. For example, you can specify exactly when you want an update to occur (including the ability to reschedule an update if your original choice ends up being less convenient than expected), or "hit the snooze button." The "snooze" capability allows you to pause the update process completely for three days when you need uninterrupted time on your device. In addition, we are widening the "Active Hours" time so Windows doesn’t install an update at times when you want your device to be ready to use. Here are two screen shots of the choices you will have when the Creators Update becomes available.

He also explains that Microsoft is adding a new icon to the Windows Update Settings page so you can see at a glance if your device is up to date or not.

In addition, Cable briefly discusses the privacy settings experience that will appear in the Creators Update, including screenshots of how it will look.

The blog post stresses repeatedly how these changes are the result of user feedback, and that Insiders are helping to shape the direction of Windows 10. We know that Microsoft is prone to selective deafness when it comes to listening to its customers, but it looks as if the software giant is taking notice of some of the biggest complaints users have about the new OS and is acting on them. Whether Microsoft will go far enough to silence critics of Windows 10 remains to be seen, but it certainly seems to be taking steps in the right direction.
