Stack Overflow introduces salary calculator for developers
Stack Overflow has introduced a salary calculator to help developers get a better idea of how much money they should earn. The tool takes into account important information such as job location, years of experience and technologies used to reveal what it considers to be typical salaries.
Stack Overflow says that the results are based on the data collected in its yearly developer survey. The salary calculator currently supports five markets -- Canada, France, Germany, US and UK -- and seven major cities -- Toronto, Paris, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and London.
"We did this because we believe developers should be empowered with more information around job searches, careers, and salary," says Stack Overflow. "In fact, we know that developers want more salary information to make better choices about their careers." Job listings that include salary information receive 75 percent more clicks that those that don't, says Stack Overflow.
Stack Overflow says that one of the most important factors that determine the salary is the developer's location. The median salary in US is significantly higher than in Canada, Germany, UK or France. Based on Stack Overflow's data, a developer with five years of experience could earn, on average, around $34,000 more in US than in Canada, Germany or the UK and $47,000 more than in Germany.
What is more, there is also a noticeable difference between major cities in the same country. For example, a backend Java developer with one year of experience, with no Bachelor's degree can earn between $66,000 (25th percentile) and $94,000 (75th percentile) in New York. In San Francisco, the same developer could earn between $74,000 and $105,000. The 50th percentile puts the salary at $78,000 and $88,000, respectively, which would be the average in those areas.
But the role and the technologies that developers use also play a major role. Stack Overflow says that, in the US, DevOps specialists earn the most, followed by data scientists and embedded app/device developers. At the other end of the spectrum are database administrators, graphics programmers, and graphic designers, who come in last place based on median salaries.
