Increased mobile Web demands at the heart of new mobile YouTube
Mobile Web consumption is growing at an explosive rate according to reports from both the PEW Internet and American Life Project and Morgan Stanley, and in as few as five years, our mobile devices could be our primary connection to the Web.
To address this explosion in mobile Web consumption, YouTube last night unveiled a new mobile site with all the features of the traditional YouTube.
YouTube yesterday said that traffic to m.youtube.com has grown 160% over the last year to more than 100 million video playbacks a day, so it has vastly improved its mobile site's speed, made its interface larger and more finger-friendly, and incorporated all of the features of the desktop browser version such as suggestions, favorites, and playlists.
Some reports have already claimed that this new mobile site is better than the YouTube mobile apps for Android and iOS, and YouTube said yesterday that updates will also come to the mobile site much sooner than they will to the mobile apps.
Point your mobile browser to m.youtube.com, to check it out. We've played with it extensively on both the Android and iOS platforms, but we're interested to hear your experiences on BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and BREW-based platforms. Let us know!
