OWC Atlas FXR is the world's smallest Thunderbolt CFexpress card reader
Do photographers and videographers still use SD cards? Yes. In fact, I would guess that most do. However, the writing is on the wall, and the faster CFexpress Type B memory cards are obviously the future. Those with cutting-edge camera equipment are already enjoying the benefits of these superior cards.
The problem? Most computers, including the newest MacBook Pro laptops, do not come with integrated readers for these cards. And so, consumers must invest in external readers. Today, OWC unveils what it says is the "smallest Thunderbolt CFexpress card reader." Called "Atlas FXR," it connects using Thunderbolt 3/4 to provide insane speeds. It is also compatible with USB-C and comes with a USB-A adapter. In addition, the company is releasing its own line of CFexpress Type B memory cards called "Atlas Pro" and "Atlas Pro Ultra."

"Sized similarly to a debit card, the OWC Atlas FXR is the smallest Thunderbolt CFexpress card reader. It allows you to transfer video footage and photos on location, studio, or the edit suite to virtually any Thunderbolt or USB port-equipped computer or tablet at over 1500MB/s speed. Nearly 7x smaller than other Thunderbolt CFX readers, bus-powered Atlas FXR easily fits into the smallest camera bag, so you can pack more accessories to help capture amazing content," says OWC.

The company adds, "The OWC Atlas Pro and Atlas Pro Ultra CFexpress Type B memory cards are rugged and OWC Beyond Fast. They’re ideal for professional photographers, videographers, and content creators who need to capture every crucial moment at confidently one-time events like sports, weddings, and concerts."
Sadly, these new CFexpress Type B memory cards and the associated Thunderbolt reader will not be available for purchase until Q2 of 2022. In other words, they are at least three months away. OWC is not yet sharing pricing either. What we do know, however, are the capacities of the cards -- Atlas Pro will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, while the Atlas Pro Ultra will be sold in 320GB and 640GB. You should be able to buy them here once available.
