Motorola announces second gen WiMAX hardware

Today, Motorola announced two new 802.16e devices, one for fixed connectivity, and one that's somewhat more nomadic.

Motorola's recent announcement that it would be departing the mobile phone business drew attention to other strong offerings from the company, such as its WiMAX solutions. Today, the company announced two second generation 802.16e devices.

The first is a piece of customer premises equipment (CPE), the desktop wireless broadband CPEi 750 modem. It comes in both 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz, features one data and two VoIP/ATA ports, and provides plug-and-play functionality. The CPEi 750 is scheduled for release by mid-2008.

The other device is the PCCw 200 PC Card for mobile connectivity to WiMAX with global roaming capabilities. Also handling both the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz band, the device will see a commercial deployment in 2008's second quarter.

With already 17 commercial WiMAX contracts, and engagements in over 40 countries, including a part in the upcoming Sprint XOHM deployment, Motorola's position in the Wireless Metropolitan Area Network market is undoubtedly strong.
