Intel's SpeedStep To Push Battery Life

Intel Corp. next week will unveil its new "SpeedStep" chips for mobile PCs, claimed to
automatically power down for longer battery performance.

US reports say SpeedStep will be used on two new Pentium III
mobile processors. The first is said to run at 650MHz when
the notebook is plugged into AC power and at 500MHz when
running on a battery. The second runs at 600MHz on AC and
500MHz on battery.

"The goal was less to give you more batteries when you're
not plugged in and more to give you a turbo boost when you
do have an outlet around," said Manny Vara, an Intel
spokesman with an unusually awkward turn of phrase.

Meanwhile, Intel has cut the price of its 500MHz Celeron
chip by 10 percent to $128, the 466MHz Celeron to $89 and
the 433MHz to $69. The recently introduced 533MHz Celeron
remains at $167.

The company is expected to report higher fourth-quarter
earnings today.
