The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are a huge hit at Sprint and T-Mobile
The latest iPhones may not be hugely different compared to last year's models, but consumers do not seem to mind it. According to pre-order reports from Sprint and T-Mobile, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are off to a great start, being received extremely well by their customers.
Sprint today announced that, in the first three days, pre-orders for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are more than 375 percent higher compared to last year. The carrier does not say whether that is a new record for the iPhone. Over at T-Mobile, however, the new smartphones did set a new bar.
T-Mobile says that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus set new records for pre-orders and pre-registrations. In terms of pre-registrations, the carrier announced that Apple's new smartphone bested both the iPhone 6s and the "smash-hit" iPhone 6, which suggests that there is huge interest in the new generation.
The former is more interesting and relevant to their sales performance, however, and in this case the carrier says that pre-orders "from Friday through Monday" were up nearly 400 percent "compared to the next most popular iPhone". What's more, T-Mobile says that "Friday set a single day sales record for any smartphone ever in T-Mobile US history".
T-Mobile does not say what "the next most popular iPhone" is, but based on Apple's pre-order figures from the last two years it is either the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6s -- the former is more likely to be the one, as it posted figures close to the next generation while being initially offered in fewer markets.
If you are expecting Apple to follow up with an announcement of its own you will have to wait until it releases its earnings report for Q3 2016, as the Cupertino, Calif.-based corporation will no longer post initial sales figures. Apple claims that sales this year will be determined by supply and not demand, suggesting that any numbers it posts do not reflect consumers' interest in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
