Alcatel-Lucent looks to collect from Microsoft

The telecommunications company presented arguments at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, asking for a $1.52 judgment against Microsoft to be reinstated.

A San Diego court found the Redmond company liable in February 2007 of infringing on two patents related to MP3 technologies. That judgment came out of a case that was originally filed against Gateway and Dell in 2003, for using MP3 playing software in their computers.

Judge Dismisses One Alcatel-Lucent Claim Against Microsoft

After two weeks of almost incessant bad news for Microsoft comes a ray of hope, courtesy of US District Court in San Diego: Judge Rudi Brewster has dismissed a series of patent infringement claims against Microsoft regarding technology Bell Laboratories developed for converting text into speech, in a summary judgment this afternoon.

It is an extremely important decision, especially given the subject matter of the patent: AT&T (Lucent's former parent company) is currently embroiled with Microsoft in US Supreme Court over whether Microsoft had the right to distribute software that uses AT&T's speech synthesis software in foreign copies of Windows Vista.

Alcatel-Lucent Victory in MP3 Dispute Signals Trouble for Digital Audio

In the first of a series of patent disputes regarding its claims to rights to technologies used in MP3 audio codecs, French telecommunications firm Alcatel-Lucent -- which now owns the IP first conceived by Bell Laboratories -- was awarded $1.5 billion in a jury verdict against Microsoft in a federal district court in Seattle this afternoon.

The verdict is an indication that the jury did not side with Microsoft's contention that Lucent, prior to its acquisition by Alcatel, posted a retroactive date on a patent re-application for so-called layer-3 audio technologies, thus to give the appearance that AT&T Bell Labs -- Lucent's predecessor -- worked on MP3 prior to its involvement with Fraunhofer Labs, one of Germany's leading technology research institutions. Microsoft's license to use MP3 in its Windows Media Player and other software and devices was issued by Fraunhofer, which continues to claim co-ownership of MP3.

Alcatel Sues Microsoft Over Patents

The relationship between Microsoft and Alcatel, who partnered on IPTV last year, has apparently turned sour. The French manufacturer has filed two lawsuits against Microsoft, alleging infringement of 7 patents related to digital video and network communication.

The lawsuits were filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on Friday, and are asking the court to bar Microsoft from further infringement as well as award cash damages. The complaints do not specify which products are infringing on Alcatel's patents, but do name the technologies.

Microsoft, Alcatel Join Forces on IPTV

French company Alcatel and Microsoft have announced the details of a partnership for IPTV or Internet Protocol Television. Alcatel will use Microsoft TV IPTV Edition to deliver content over broadband networks and use Microsoft's technology in its hardware. Both companies hope that the agreement will help to accelerate growth in IPTV services.

"By aligning the efforts of both companies, we can provide a complete solution...and significantly raise the bar for consumer services in the home," said Moshe Lichtman, corporate vice president of the Microsoft TV Division. Microsoft has already signed agreements with other companies, including SBC Communications, BellSouth and Telecom Italia.
