Virtual Hard Drive For Free Last-Minute File Storage

Procrastinators just beginning to ponder what to do about
potential Y2K bugaboos can back up critical files for free.

FreeDiskSpace.com offers the use of its virtual hard drive to safely
and securely store up to 300 megabytes (MB) of computer users worried
that the Millennium Bug will zap everything on their PCs.

"We looked beyond the typical uses of our service and found that there
was a vital need for customers to have a place to back up their files
in case of the Y2K bug," said Ari Freeman, the company's co-founder
and chief strategic officer. "We offer 300 megabytes of free space in
a password-protected account to store all your files in a...folder."

FreeDiskSpace allows users to create private or shared folders, track
access to shared folders and establish read/write authorizations
without the expense of high storage backup disks or zip drives. Files
can be retrieved anytime via the Internet.

FreeDiskSpace backs up your backup. "Every day," Freeman told
Newsbytes, "we back up our entire system and every day we send that
backup to an offsite location - a secure, safe location."

How safe? "We can never be 100 percent sure - the FBI gets hacked
into once in a while," says Freeman, citing the use of unique
passwords, secure transfers, and a sophisticated firewall.

MP3 files, video files, photo albums, presentations and other big
files can be placed on the FreeDiskSpace virtual hard drive. Those
with shared access can download and upload files whenever they want.

FreeDiskSpace recently upped its per-user space from 25MB to 300MB,
which touched off a flurry of sign-ups double the normal daily rate.
Subscribers, however, generally don't fill individual space to 300MB.

"Most people don't store close to that much," Freeman says. "It's more
of a security issue for people who feel they'd like to have (that
much) space."

FreeDiskSpace is popular among individual users, small and home
businesses, and students.
