Novell Brings NetWare Client to Linux

After acquiring Linux companies SuSE and Ximian, and reorganizing its business around the open source platform, Novell is developing its first client software for Linux desktops. The Novell Client connects to NetWare and the company's Open Enterprise Server, which is currently in beta testing.

Novell previously made inroads into the development of a Linux based client, but after outsourcing the project, it was never completed nor released. However, with the final release of Open Enterprise Server due this month, customers have requested a way to connect to Novell services from Linux workstations.

Open Enterprise Server builds Novell's NetWare kernel into SuSE Linux Server 9, Enterprise Edition, creating a networking platform based on open source and commercial software. Novell has incorporated fault-tolerance tools and productivity applications into the server, including iFolders and Virtual Office.

The Novell Client for Linux translates login script commands to their Linux counterparts, enabling the use of eDirectory, single synchronized login and multi-protocol support.

Novell is planning to beta test the client in mid-February and is looking for a small group of customers to provide feedback. "In this arrangement, you would be first to receive new versions of the software and you would receive free technical support for the duration of the test cycle," Novell says.

Tester requirements include completing test cases following each beta release, participating in conference calls, as well as answering survey questions. Interested Linux users can find our more information and apply for the beta on Novell's Web site.
