Cybersecurity awareness education: The beginnings of change

More than eight in 10 data breaches globally can be attributed to human error.
People are the weakest link in cybersecurity. And this weakness comes from a lack of awareness about our cyber risk and the behaviors that influence it. Many people see cybersecurity as an IT concern. In truth, cybersecurity concerns everyone. When our hospitals get infected with ransomware, we can’t receive care. When our organizations experience a cyberattack, we lose our jobs. Still, we tend to underestimate the importance of cybersecurity to our society and economy.
US and UK are the countries most attacked by ransomware

In the 12 months from April 2022 to March 2023 the US and UK were the countries that suffered the most ransomware attacks.
However, the latest Malwarebytes ransomware report shows that the USA suffered a little over seven times more attacks in the last twelve months than the UK. It's perhaps not a coincidence that the USA's economic output, measured by gross domestic product (GDP), is also about seven times larger than the UK's.
Evolving vulnerabilities in the education sector: How can organizations become more resilient?

In 2022, the education sector experienced a 44 percent increase in cyberattacks. In the UK alone, six in ten higher education institutes reported experiencing at least weekly attacks or breaches. This increasing number of threats to the sector is causing major disruptions to teaching and even forcing schools and universities to shut down.
When it comes to prioritizing security and adopting latest technology, the education sector has always lagged behind other major industries. This lack of urgency is party the reason why education is such a vulnerable target. Many schools are still using outdated and unprotected technology that is easy to infiltrate. Despite not being a cash-rich target, these facilities hold a wealth of personal and financial data, which can be used in future attacks or sold on the dark web.
ChatGPT may not be a bad thing for education

Educators and school administrators are becoming increasingly concerned over the proliferation of ChatGPT and other AI-based educational tools. Some see it as a threat to education, especially in English and writing.
However, ChatGPT might not be all bad. Some aspects of the innovative AI chatbot can provide value to those in the education sector. Can ChatGPT become an integral part of the modern learning system?
IT decision makers want custom content from tech vendors to guide purchase decisions

A new survey of over 600 IT and business decision-makers from Foundry shows that 96 percent are interested in receiving custom tailored content when they contact a tech vendor.
The most desired customizations being by industry (54 percent), technology platform(s) they already have installed at their organization (49 percent), company size (31 percent) and job responsibilities (28 percent).
Almost half of education institutions see attacks on their cloud infrastructure

A new study reveals that 47 percent of educational institutions have suffered a cyberattack on their cloud infrastructure within the last 12 months.
The research from Netwrix shows that for 27 percent of these incidents in the cloud were associated with unplanned expenses being incurred to fix security gaps.
Securing the new hybrid education network

Even before 2020, connectivity played an important role in university life. In recent years, however, connectivity shifted from a mere convenience to a lifeline for students and universities. As these institutions built and expanded online remote access for their students, many from scratch, their IT departments were forced to shift their focus from on-campus networking to supporting a distributed global network to meet the new normal of education.
Although in-person teaching has now seen a welcome return, the wealth of online learning resources available, both on internal and external networks, are an invaluable asset to both teachers and students. Meanwhile, online retail, banking, health services, gaming, media, and more are mainstays of student life.
Logitech Pen is a student-focused Chromebook stylus with USB-C charging

Chromebooks may not be the most powerful or useful computers, but they do excel in one specific area -- simplicity. The Linux-based Chrome OS operating system is streamlined and secure, making it a dream for system administrators and IT departments. Sure, a Windows computer may have more possibilities, but it also has a greater chance of malware.
Because Chromebooks are so simple to use and maintain, the computers have been very popular for education. Of course, the low hardware costs are often a contributing factor as well. Many new Chromebooks have touch screens, and for those machines with CCI stylus support, Logitech has a new such product to make compatible Chrome OS laptops (and tablets) even more useful in the classroom.
Windows 11 SE is Microsoft's Chrome OS rival

It’s been rumored for a while, but today Microsoft finally took the wraps off Windows 11 SE, its education-focused operating system.
Built specifically to support the K-8 classroom, Windows 11 SE will be available on devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, and others, as well as on the new Surface Laptop SE (pictured above) which Microsoft says has been "custom built for students".
The fall back-to-school tech most worth your money in 2021

The past year or two have been chaotic for parents and students alike due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Transitioning from traditional, in-person learning to a hybrid or fully remote learning environment proved challenging for many students.
As we enter the latter half of 2021 and begin a new school year, it’s critical to see this moment as a fresh start -- and with a fresh start comes new technology! Students will need the latest and greatest tech to get them through the school year. Whether it’s a new pair of headphones or a snazzy new laptop, consider the six items listed below during your back-to-school shopping experience.
Education sector sees more security incidents and longer fix times

A new report from NTT Application Security shows that last year the education sector saw 408 publicly-disclosed school incidents, including student and staff data breaches, ransomware and other malware outbreaks, phishing attacks and other social engineering scams, plus a wide variety of other incidents.
This is 18 percent more incidents than were publicly-disclosed during the previous calendar year and equates to more than two incidents a day. The sector also has lower remediation rates and a higher than average time to fix.
Why investing in customer education is imperative to your business

Despite advances in software and excitement about what products and services can do today, implementation often remains a barrier. Companies are hesitant to spend money on something that requires a significant time investment to figure out, and leaders want to ensure that new software purchases don’t sit on the shelf because employees lack the knowledge to fully leverage their capabilities.
If software vendors hope to remain competitive in today’s SaaS-based world, they must be prepared to address customers’ adoption issues and fears. If a service is not being utilized for whatever reason, organizations won’t have to look far to replace it. Sales and customer retention increasingly depend upon delivering comprehensive product education. This has become a new business imperative, sparking an evolution in how training is deployed.
Student deal alert: Kubuntu Focus XE Linux laptop gets huge back-to-school price cut

Summer is quickly coming to a close, and before you know it, the school season will begin. Many parents are understandably excited to get their children out of the house and back to school. At the same time, their kids are likely dreading their return to education. I mean, learning is cool and all, but nothing beats summer fun in the sun.
Of course, the end of the summer means back-to-school shopping is now in full effect, and many students will be needing a new computer for their studies. A laptop is ideal for portability, but should you choose Windows or Mac? My suggestion is to go in a different direction -- Linux! An operating system based on the open source kernel can better prepare a child for the future.
Just say no to Windows 11 by taking Linux back to school with Kubuntu Focus XE laptop

While everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather, there is something quite terrifying for children on the horizon -- school. Yeah, summer vacation will be over before they know it, and it is already time to do back-to-school shopping. While buying pencils and three-ring binders is boring, shopping for a new laptop for school can be a lot of fun.
Thankfully, students in 2021 don't have to use an old-school Windows notebook like their dad or grandad. Instead, kids can use Linux to optimize their education. After all, Linux is more hip and cool than Windows 11 can ever be. To paraphrase now-deceased First Lady Nancy Reagan, children should "just say no" to waiting for a laptop running the upcoming Windows 11.
UK students choose creativity over tech

A new poll of over 4,000 UK Generation Z teenagers reveals that more plan to pursue studies in creative arts and design subjects rather than science, technology and IT.
The study from social app Yubo finds the most popular subject area for further studies is creative arts and design with nearly 15.4 percent of respondents saying they plan to explore further studies in this area, closely followed by medicine at 14.5 percent.
