Verizon Wireless: A Vaio-P rebate may exist for some

1:45 pm ET February 4, 2009 - Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney contacted Betanews this afternoon with a clarification: A Sony Vaio-P rebate for Verizon Wireless service does exist, she told us, for some customers, at Sony's discretion. That rebate is nationwide, but it's up to Sony to decide whether to issue those VZW-supported coupons.

Raney reiterated that since VZW does not sell netbooks in its stores, and because it leaves rebates up to resellers and partners to promote, Verizon Wireless would not be the one announcing any rebate of this nature.

Sony's Vaio P: Slim and sexy, but don't call it a 'netbook'

Never mind the tiny physical footprint of the Vaio P, if you ask Sony, they will tell you they have never made a netbook. If you ask me, however, I'll tell you they just did.

Sony's big news: the Vaio P 'Lifestyle PC'

The question in advance of Sony's first press conference at CES (there will be more than one) is whether it would choose to talk about its financial condition first. The answer is apparently "no," as it premiered its secret Vaio PC.

But in typical Sony fashion, its late afternoon press conference got off the ground about a half-hour late, amid a sea of reporters. Many of them had been given advance word of the Vaio P series, which Sony is describing as "a new line of high-performance, ultra-portable notebooks that fuses Sony's eye-catching design and mobility."

Sony to offer 'Graphic Splash' for select Vaio FW notebooks

Sony's upcoming Graphic Splash notebooks will be based on the Vaio FW multimedia PC introduced this week, and they'll be available for sale online for a limited time this fall, BetaNews has learned.

In announcing a "new line-up" of Graphic Splash notebooks on Wednesday -- plus a related contest -- Sony didn't specify whether the decoratively cased PCs will use any of the four Vaio models unveiled on Wednesday as its underpinnings, or whether they'll constitute a separate model. Photos accompanying the announcement appeared to show the new designs on the company's existing FZ series notebooks.

Today Sony announced its newest addition to the VAIO line of notebooks: the NR, its cheapest model to date.

Historically, Sony's VAIO line has been heavy on style while remaining light in your backpack. Though at times some entries in the line do look conspicuously similar to MacBook Pros, they have a design ethic that appeals to many.

Sony Unveils Hard Drive Based VAIO for Music, Video

Sony Japan is taking aim at the iPod with a new extension to its VAIO product line. The VAIO Pocket VGF-AP1 sports a 20GB hard drive, competitive with the market's invoked set of high-end music players. Sony's adoption of large capacity storage marks a sea change from its heavy reliance on Walkman minidisc recorders.

The player is capable of displaying digital photos through its 2.2 inch 320x256 color LCD display, making a competitive play towards rival Microsoft's upcoming Portable Media Center class of devices that also support digital imagery. Digital cameras may connect via USB to the player's cradle to transfer images.
