Motorola Introduces Second-Gen RAZR

Motorola on Tuesday introduced the second revision of its popular RAZR phone, complete with support for next-generation high speed data, a thinner profile, and higher-resolution display screens.

The RAZR 2 phone will initially become available this July in select markets. Among the features are up to 2GB of on-board memory, as well as an operating system based on Linux and Java. The new OS would mean a completely new user interface for the phone, something Motorola customers have long been desiring.

A new CrystalTalk feature will help the user place calls in noisy environments by automatically adjusting volume. Voice technology has been added to speak what is on the screen, and Windows Mobile is included for playing music files. The browser on the RAZR 2 will also support full HTML to view standard Web pages.

"This device takes the world's best-selling feature phone to the next level," remarked Motorola chief executive Ed Zander. "Combining groundbreaking new features and an even slimmer exterior than the original icon, the RAZR 2 is capable of giving consumers the ultimate mobile experience."

Motorola hopes the new RAZR 2 will help the company get its financial situation back in order. After several quarters of good financial results thanks to strong sales of the original RAZR, Motorola swung to a loss in the first quarter of this year - largely due to a lack of new phone models.
