Updated MSN 8 Released to Subscribers

In an update originally branded MSN 8.5, Microsoft issued numerous improvements to its subscription based MSN 8 service. The new version number that appeared in beta testing was dropped from the final release, as subscribers will receive the free upgrade automatically while logged on. Microsoft began testing MSN 8.5 in March after inviting current subscribers to join the beta program.

The updates to MSN include improved performance, additional spam filtering with new algorithms to hunt for unwanted messages, as well as easier to use parental controls. Incoming e-mails are blocked until they are scanned for viruses, and embedded images do not appear from persons not in a subscriber's address book. An on-screen meter has also been added to display how much inbox space has been used.

Customization is a primary area of focus in the release, with subscribers now able modify the MSN Dashboard. Any Web site can be set as the default homepage and a history list is available from the address bar.

"Since the release of MSN 8 last year, we've made enhancements to the service that have continuously improved the experience for subscribers," said Lisa Gurry, MSN group product manager. "With this update, we've used feedback from subscribers to create a larger number of improvements, and we've combined them into one update that will make MSN 8 easier to use and even more useful."

AOL has also been ratcheting up its service, debuting AOL 8.0 Plus this spring. The company planned an additional refresh to AOL 8.0 Plus scheduled to launch alongside MSN 8.5, but opted to wait and position the release as AOL 9.0, which is due this fall.

The full update release, MSN 8.5 Build 1712.2, is available for download via FileForum.
