SanDisk branches out in both consumer and enterprise SSD software


Following the company's debut of new Solid State Drives (SSDs) yesterday, California-based flash storage company SanDisk made two announcements on Wednesday pertaining to the software side of the company's solid state drive business.

First, SanDisk announced that it had acquired FlashSoft, and second that it has formed an exclusive partnership with Diskeeper Corp for SSD software solutions. Both announcements cover similar ground, but span the consumer and enterprise settings.

Got a Mac and non-Apple SSD? You need TRIM Enabler 2.0

Hot on the heels of a fifth Beta release last week, TRIM Enabler 2.0 has been given a final, stable release. TRIM Enabler 2.0, which extends TRIM support to non-Apple SSDs in OS X Lion, features a complete rewrite and new way of enabling TRIM by patching existing SSD drivers rather than replacing them.

Recent updates have also improved the speed of the patching process, plus TRIM Enabler now automatically updates when changes have been made instead of requiring a manual refresh. The final release has also introduced a new automatic update checker, allowing users to be prompted when a new version is released.

O&O releases new defrag and disk image server software

Hard drive management specialist O&O Software has revealed the latest Server Editions of its flagship defrag and disk imaging tools. But while the packages are clearly targeted at businesses, they could be useful to anyone who has to manage a network.

The core functionality is the same as you’ll see in the other editions. So, for instance, DiskImage 6 Server Edition is a versatile tool for backing up everything from selected files and folders, to individual partitions or complete hard drives. It’s highly flexible (you can exclude particular files from an image backup, or restore only whatever elements of an image that you actually need), and is packed with essential features.

Arbitrators tell Western Digital to pay Seagate $525 million in trade secret spat

Western Digital is liable for $525 million in damages to Seagate following an arbitration decision regarding the misappropriation of trade secrets. The ruling stems from a court case brought by Seagate in 2006 against Western Digital and one of its former employees who had taken a job with its competitor.

That employee is accused of sharing information with his new employer, although court proceedings were stayed while the two sides entered arbitration in 2007. The arbitrator sided with Seagate in the matter.
