Google has not given up on Google+ -- requested changes are incoming, and the 'classic' site will go!
Despite the competition from other social networks, and widespread ridicule, Google is determined not to pull the plug on Google+. Instead, the company today announces that a trio of changes are coming to the service based on user feedback.
Google is keen for users to experience its services on any device they may have, so it's little surprise that one of the changes sees the addition of a zoom function so Google+ users on smartphones can get a closer look at photos. There are also key changes to the commenting system and the welcome arrival of a much-requested feature.
Google+ is rife with drivel, and this is never more apparent than in the comments. With this in mind, the company says it is going to do more to filter out the crap: "We're making it easier to have good conversations by hiding lower quality comments on posts, so you can focus on the comments that matter most". But fear not... this does not mean that 'lower quality comments' will disappear completely: "If you'd like to see all the comments on a post, you can always click or tap 'View more comments'".
In a blog post explaining the changes, product manager Danielle Buckley says:
Finally (drumroll please!), we’re bringing Events over to the new Google+. While there's more to be done to improve the experience, beginning January 24th you’ll be able to create and join events on Google+ web as you have in the past. Please note that Events will not be available for G Suite at this time.
The changes and additions will roll out over the next couple of weeks, but the news doesn't end there. January 24 sees the death of 'classic Google+ on the web', with the focus now being on the 'new Google+'.
