Defraggler update supports Windows 7 SP1

Piriform Software has released a new update for its free Windows defragmentation utility. Defraggler 2.03 is now fully compatible with Windows 7 Service Pack 1, and it includes a number of interesting new features and fixes.

Defraggler is a free (for non-commercial use) tool that can defrag entire drives or just quickly defrag selected files and folders. It supports both FAT/FAT32 and NTFS drives, and it includes a quick-defrag option, scheduler for keeping your drive defragged at regular intervals and an option to defrag free space only.

Aside from adding support for Windows 7 SP1, Defraggler 2.03 also boasts improved support for situations where not much memory is available. It also includes an improved file-shuffling algorithm, which allows it to move files out of the way during the defrag process for better file placement.

The program also tweaks performance on FAT drives to improve the speed of the file list, plus quicker start/stop processes. Drive map block sizes are now updated dynamically, and the Search tab produces better results when opting to find specific files for defragging with "Include non-fragmented files" selected. Tabs can also be navigated using the [Ctrl] + [Tab] key combination.

The option for moving new extensions to the end of the drive is checked by default -- another extra -- and there's better handling of file delimiters in the exclude list.

Bug fixes include one that prevented shutdown from occurring when running Freespace Defrag, and there's improved support for very long non-English strings and non-standard Windows colors.

Defraggler 2.03 is free for personal use, and requires a PC running Windows XP, Vista or 7. A portable version is also available.
