Gates Plays Up Partners in CES Keynote
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates used his keynote address at the 2005 CES Wednesday to play up several of the deals it has struck with various companies in an effort to display Microsoft's commitment to "bringing the digital lifestyle into the mainstream." The address served to give attendees a broad idea of what Microsoft and its partners have been working on over the past year.
"We are at the forefront in making broad technology investments and delivering breakthroughs that bring the digital lifestyle into the mainstream," Gates said. "Our strategy is to deliver great software and a platform for partner innovation, so consumers can choose from a vast array of devices and services that work together seamlessly and suit the way they live."
Among the deals touted by Gates were agreements between Microsoft and MTV Networks to produce content for its PlaysForSure devices. Gates also said an agreement had been reached with TiVo to allow the company's new TiVoToGo service to function on the Microsoft-certified devices as well.
Some progress was reported on Microsoft's effort to get devices "certified" by the company; so far 50 released devices and eight download services support the program.
To further Gates' focus on entertainment, NBC late-night personality Conan O'Brien joined the Microsoft chairman onstage to demonstrate several of the devices including a new camera from Nikon that allows the user to wirelessly send pictures to a Media Center PC. "Great software can bring consumers a vast array of devices and services that all work together seamlessly," Gates said.
Other announcements during the keynote address included a recommitment to the company's MSN Direct technology, and an agreement with SBC Communications to use its IPTV, or Internet protocol-based TV. Microsoft says that IPTV will make possible "HD programming, DVR features, video on demand and multiple picture-in-picture capabilities" in a way current providers cannot.
Gates finished his address saying that the holiday season was a "milestone" for the company and its partners. "We've seen how the power of software can enhance consumers' digital experiences, help ensure that they work together seamlessly, and offer people more choices than ever," he said. "The digital lifestyle is here to stay."
