Why Ashley Madison's 'oh no' data breach didn't scare new users away

There once was a time when most people hadn’t heard of casual dating site Ashley Madison. That all changed in July 2015, when hackers stole sensitive customer information and posted the information on the dark web in a massive data dump, 9.7 gigabytes in size. The files included account details and logins for approximately 32 million of the dating site’s users.

One year later, the dating site is doing several things to redeem its damaged reputation, including rebranding its parent company from Avid Life Media to Ruby, bringing in a new CEO and President to lead the business, revamping their value proposition and launching their first-ever TV ad.

Apple's water gun vs. Microsoft's realistic pistol -- which emoji is right? Vote now!

Regardless of your stance on guns, I think everyone can agree that firearms deserve to be treated with respect. Even staunch 2nd amendment proponents will tell you that the weapons are not toys. Proper training and understanding of their potential danger are key for safety.

Understandably, however, some parents don't want their children -- or themselves -- to have guns in their lives at all. Thanks to emoji, guns are sort of unavoidable nowadays. While parents can refuse to buy toy guns for their children, pistol symbols in communications are now a thing. Well, except on iOS 10 beta, that is. Apple has chosen to go against the tech world and Unicode consortium by using a water gun to represent the pistol emoji. Are Tim Cook and company right or wrong in this decision?

Business apps are not ready for EU's GDPR rules

Time is relentless. The GDPR is moving ever closer, while at the same time apps aren’t. And that’s a huge problem for businesses, because if apps are not GDPR-compliant, they’re not GDPR complaint. That can mean huge fines, possibly even the end of businesses.

The fact that apps are far away from being GDPR compliant came as a result of a new and extensive study by Blue Coat Labs. The company analyzed more than 15,000 enterprise cloud applications in use and 108 million enterprise documents stored and shared within them.

Shadow IT

Today's climate of digital transformation (DX) is giving rise to a variety of intriguing cloud and software-as-a-service based offerings.

Apple sees disappointing iPhone sales in India

Smartphone apps

India is the third-largest smartphone market worldwide, after China and the United States. In the second quarter of the year, vendors shipped just over 30 million devices, the vast majority of which run Android. That is no different than what is happening in the other leading markets, China and United States, except for one thing: iPhone sales.

Apple is a major player in both China and United States, where its market share is well into double digits. However, in India, the iPhone is not as appealing to local shoppers, as only 2.4 percent of the smartphones shipped in Q2 2016 feature Apple's logo on the back.

Microsoft: What have you done to my Windows 10?

Maybe it’s my age, but I’ve found that I just don’t have the time or patience to play with Windows betas anymore. The bugs. The instabilities. The bricked PCs. I simply can’t get excited about once again playing guinea pig for Microsoft.

In fact, aside from a minor dalliance with a "Redstone" pre-release build late last year, I have effectively sat-out the entire Anniversary Update testing cycle. I figured, "Windows 10 (RTM) was working great for me. Why muck it up by installing some buggy preview edition?"

Open huge text files instantly with LogViewer

You’re trying to troubleshoot some PC issue, the answer could be in a log file, so you open it using Notepad… And often wait, and wait, and wait, because the program takes so very long to parse larger files.

Seagate unveils 'energy-efficient' Nytro XF1230 SATA Enterprise SSD

There are many reasons why solid state drives are better than mechanical hard drives. Obviously, they are very much faster -- an upgrade to SSD can make an older PC feel new again. Also, they are silent, meaning you don't have to listen to a grinding-like seek sound.

One of the forgotten aspects as to why SSDs are better, however, is energy savings. Since they use less electricity, they can save money and allow batteries to last longer. Today, Seagate announces a new enterprise SSD that it calls 'energy-efficient'. But aren't they all?
