Samsung and LG join forces to combat Qualcomm, DVB-H on US mobile DTV
An agreement between Korea's principal developers of mobile digital television technology has paved the way for a direct agreement between them and the US' leading broadcasters for a standard to compete with cell phones and satellite.
Next February, American analog television stations will cease transmission, as their broadcasters complete their move to an all-digital standard on new frequencies, using the ATSC DTV broadcasting standard. So there will already be one over-the-airwaves standard for US broadcasters, and very likely Canadian. This has left many wondering, does there really need to be a second or even third standard exclusively for mobile digital television?
No surprises from Samsung and Verizon with their Glyde phone
The CDMA version of Samsung's F700 that has been seen in Europe since last year, the Glyde is a GPS-enabled 2.8" touchscreen and QWERTY slider that will be made available to Verizon customers tomorrow both online and at company stores.
The cardinal elements of the handset's design have been re-hashed by practically every major mobile phone manufacturer from LG with its KS20/Prada Phone to this week's HTC Touch Diamond, making it stand out far less than if it had adopted a unique form factor.
A dynasty ends as Samsung's embattled CEO steps down
Under indictment for tax evasion, Samsung CEO Lee Kun-hee said he is stepping down from his position, claiming full responsibility for the affair. Lee Hak-soo, Vice Chair also departed, as well as heir apparent Lee Jae-yong.
An investigation into the South Korean electronics giant's business practices began early this year with a January raid of Samsung offices. A former lawyer for the company tipped off the government to suspicious practices, including allegations of a slush fund for bribes related to protecting the transfer of power between Lee and his son.
New Korean Samsung HSUPA phones will upload at 2 Mbps
Samsung today unveiled its new HSUPA slider, the M470, in the company's Korean homeland.
Having blazed the way with its first High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) device, the W200 -- which promised download speeds 1.8 Mbps -- as early as May 2006, Samsung showed off today the M470, its first device to use HSUPA...and in so doing, claimed upload speeds of 2 Mbps.
Samsung corruption probe to continue through April
Following a raid in January of the office of Samsung's chairman Lee Kun-hee, the lead Korean prosecutor in the case is being given extra time to complete his investigation.
Special prosecutor Cho Joon-woong asked for additional time as he claimed he would not be able to complete the investigation in the original 60 days he was granted.
iSuppli: Samsung leads LCD TV Sales in 4Q
Analysis of the LCD TV market by electronics analyst firm iSuppli confirms earlier findings that established brands have vaulted ahead of upstart Vizio, making a return to the top of the charts in the fourth quarter.
But two analysts' firms have differing opinions on the breakdown. In the results of a survey from DisplaySearch, Sony took number one at 12.8%, while Samsung followed closely behind at 12.3%. iSuppli's data showed a more substantial lead for Samsung at 14.2%, followed by Sony at 12.5%.
Samsung sued over incompatible Blu-ray players
It's a story that's been hard to ignore, and now a class action lawsuit has been filed: early Blu-ray players had compatibility problems when new features and DRM were introduced into Blu-ray movies.
While Blu-ray Disc Association representatives told BetaNews at CES that early adopters "knew what they were getting into" regarding the changes to the platform, some apparently didn't. Bob McGovern, who has become the lead plaintiff in the case, says his BD-P1200 player from Samsung was unable to view "numerous Blu-ray disc titles."
From Seoul comes Soul, Samsung's new handset
Samsung unveiled its newest flagship handset and member of its "Ultra Edition" family, a line which seeks to provide the slimmest phones in attractive designs: The Soul.
The standout feature of this slider is the "Magical Touch" panel, produced by DaCP. A small panel beneath the 2.2" QVGA screen changes and adapts its functions in response to which application is running. For example, while running the MP3 player, it can act as the media control interface, or while using SMS functions, it can manipulate text.
Sony, Samsung soar; Vizio, Sharp slip in LCD TV sales
Vizio fell to third place in holiday quarter LCD TV shipments, while Sony jumped from fourth to first.
It marks the first time that the Japanese electronics maker has ever been on the top of the list in DisplaySearch's quarterly survey. The firm said that its lead was built upon its top showings in the 40-44", 45-49" and 50-54" categories.
Samsung's BlackJack finally gets Windows Mobile 6
US carrier AT&T has finally given its BlackJack handsets a long-anticipated operating system upgrade, boosting it to WM6 just as 6.1 appears around the corner.
Rumors regarding the release of this upgrade to the popular handset have abounded, since both AT&T and Samsung have kept their release dates vague.
Office of Samsung chair raided in slush fund investigation
The office of Lee Kun-hee was searched on Monday, as well as the homes of his aides, in an attempt to gain more evidence against the company in an ongoing inquiry.
It is not quite clear where the investigation may lead, however. With the South Korean economy so dependent on Samsung's successes, it is likely to only lead to sanctions rather than a breakup of the company.
Samsung tries to extend DTV transition onto cell phones
In case music, games, and video weren't enough, vendors are now vying for the opportunity to send digital television signals to your mobile phones.
Samsung is announcing later today updates to its development of Advanced-VSB (A-VSB), which is its standard for mobile digital television. It is an open standard and the company wants to have it complete and available by next February, when the US transitions to all-digital broadcasting.
