HP's new Spectre x360 laptops offer optional 4K, OLED displays
CES is quite possibly the trade show with the highest number of new Windows products showcased. Lots of such devices fly under the radar, however, as they tend not to have many, if any, standout features. HP's new Spectre x360 laptops are an exception.
What makes the 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch Spectre x360 worth bringing to your attention is HP's choice of (optional) displays. The smaller model can be had with an OLED panel, which is a very rare option in this market, while its bigger brother can be specified with a super high resolution screen, a 4K display to be exact.

According to man-made calendars, today is New Year's Eve. Tomorrow is the first day of 2016, which in the grand scheme of things is inconsequential. Still, it is fun to reflect on the last year and choose the tech that I enjoyed the most.

HP unveils Elite x2 Windows 10 hybrid for enterprise customers
HP today announced the HP Elite x2 -- a hybrid it says is perfectly designed for the mobile professional.
According to HP, it is an "incredibly versatile" device that offers the "productivity of a full notebook with the convenience of a tablet".
HP Enterprise launches new Docker solutions for business
Docker has been widely adopted by enterprises looking for tools that allow for fast development, testing and management of applications.
HP Enterprise (HPE) is using this week's DockerCon Europe to introduce a new line up of solutions for the Docker ecosystem. These encompass cloud, software, storage and services to allow businesses to use Docker to help them move to a hybrid infrastructure in a scalable, secure and trusted manner.
Left behind by the Windows 10 bandwagon
I consider myself a patient person. After more than 25 years in the IT industry you sort of have to be. When I bought my first real hybrid 2-in-1 PC -- an HP Envy x2 -- I learned to put up with the many quirks of the then brand-new Windows 8. And when Windows 8.1 arrived, I tolerated several weeks of display artifacts and other graphical anomalies, confident that they would all get sorted out -- eventually.
Which they did. In fact, for each case a new round of device drivers -- specifically, for the Envy x2’s Atom Z2760 chipset and associated Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) video subsystem -- cured what ailed it. So it’s understandable that I would expect a similar scenario to play out with Windows 10. After all, Microsoft’s new OS is really just a retread of Windows 8 (which was itself a retread of Windows 7, etc.). And my trusty Envy x2 excels at running Windows 8.1.
HP AMD-powered t730 is first thin client with native 4K -- offers Windows or Linux
Business workstations and thin clients are often boring affairs; however, they do not have to be. There is no reason why such a computer cannot have some sweet technology inside of it.
Today, HP announces the t730 thin client -- an exciting thin client. This svelte machine features a quad-core AMD APU and up to 16GB of RAM. The truly impressive aspect, however, is that it can natively support 4K video out -- HP claims it is the world's first thin client to do so. It features an impressive four full-size DisplayPort connectors. You can even add an AMD Fire Pro W2100 for a total of six Display Ports.
New incident response platform aims to improve cyber resilience
According to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, more than 90 percent of organizations recognize cyber resilience as an essential part of protecting their core assets and business interests.
Part of creating that protection is to have an effective plan for when things go wrong and incident response solutions specialist Resilient Systems is releasing version 24 of its Incident Response Platform (IRP). The release features strategic integrations with IBM X-Force's threat intelligence feed and HP ArcSight, enabling organizations to gain insight more quickly and respond more intelligently to cyber threats and attacks of all types.
HP details new Helion OpenStack cloud platform
Hewlett-Packard recently announced HP Helion OpenStack 2.0, the second iteration of the company’s customized version of OpenStack. During the OpenStack Summit Tokyo 2015, HP announced the "production ready, open source based cloud platform designed to meet enterprise requirements".
HP Helion OpenStack 2.0 offers an enterprise grade cloud platform, the company said in a press release, adding that it now offers new features to address organizations’ lifecycle management and security challenges.
What's next for the PC: 'PC Does Whaaat?!' campaign
If the tech space is evolving and competitive on the cutting edge, then the PC market is on the bleeding edge. Many factors have affected the industry, but the PC’s fate has been due to the appeal of smartphones, tablets, and the need for mobility. While mobile devices are the rave, can they really replace the workload and capabilities of the PC?
In an effort to make the PC "cool" again, five major PC makers -- Microsoft, Intel, Dell, HP and Lenovo -- joined together to launch a $70 million, 6-week advertising campaign. The campaign, titled, "PC Does Whaaat?!”, launched with targeted online TV commercials focusing on the features available on the Windows 10 platform, and through broadcast and social media channels in the US and China.
HP to 'sunset' Helion Public Cloud in 2016
HP is going to shut down its cloud business, and this time it means it. Seriously. The company’s executive, Bill Hilf, wrote a post on the HP blog, where he announced that the Helion service will be put out of its misery next year.
"We will sunset our HP Helion Public Cloud offering on January 31, 2016", he writes. Instead, the company will focus on turning its hardware gear into the building blocks for private enterprise clouds.
Lenovo won't sell Surface because it sees Microsoft as a competitor
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has proven to be very popular with business users, enough to push Dell and HP to announce that they would officially sell and support the device, alongside their own Windows offerings. Dell and HP are the third and second-largest PC vendors, respectively, so, naturally, market leader Lenovo was expected to also join the Surface Enterprise fold.
That has yet to happen, but it is not due to the lack of customer demand as some folks might be inclined to believe. The reason why Lenovo does not want to sell Surface Pro 3 is because, well, it sees Microsoft as a competitor.
HP and 3M join forces to fight visual hacking
If you are like me, you do a lot of work on the go. Not a day goes by where I am not typing away on my laptop in a public place like Starbucks or on a bench. Unfortunately, this opens me up to visual hacking. In other words, devious people can simply glance at my laptop to see what I am doing. If you work with sensitive information, this is a huge problem.
According to a recent 3M-funded study, 90 percent of visual hacking attempts are successful. Luckily, HP has teamed up with 3M to fight this visual hacking scourge. Rather than use clunky screen covers, the computer manufacturer will integrate the 3M technology directly into the laptop display. Whoa.

A recently released report by advocacy group Citizens for Tax Justice has revealed the staggering amount of money being held in offshore accounts by US technology firms.

Microsoft announces a string of events for new Windows 10 devices
