Windows Messenger 5.0 Enters Beta Testing

The next generation release of Windows Messenger, branded version 5.0, is set to enter beta testing according to an e-mail sent to prospective testers.

Windows Messenger is designed to work with Microsoft's upcoming "Greenwich" Real Time Communications Server, which runs on Windows Server 2003. The release will catch the instant messaging client up to its consumer counterpart, MSN Messenger, which reached 5.0 late last year.

"We are currently offering the Beta to participants who use Instant Messaging regularly, and will keep the Beta open until the end of June, 2003," Microsoft's Windows Messenger 5.0 Product Team wrote in the e-mail.

"Our goal is to have a well targeted group of testers willing to actively participate and provide useful feedback to our development team. Please carefully consider your willingness and ability to test Windows Messenger 5.0 Beta."

Selected testers will be expected to download releases of the Windows Messenger beta and complete periodic surveys regarding various technical issues.

Those interested can apply to the Windows Messenger 5.0 beta program by logging into BetaPlace with the Guest ID WinM5Beta and completing a nomination survey. "Participants will be chosen based on the survey results," says Microsoft.
