Kaspersky 2014 gets 'Patch B' release, essential for forthcoming Windows 8.1

Kaspersky has released updated installer versions of Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014. Both updates include the recently rolled out "Patch B", which adds support for Windows 8.1 and Firefox 23/24.

The update also fixes a number of bugs, but previously had to be installed separately after installing KIS 2014 or KAV 2014.

Review: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014

Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 makes big claims about its malware-blocking technology. But how would the suite perform in real life? We decided to find out.

Installation proved straightforward enough, if a little slow; the suite doesn’t exactly leap into action. We liked the fact that it doesn’t demand you remove any competing products, though -- that’s a decision which really needs to be left up to the user -- and after waiting for a minute or two, setup was complete and the program finally appeared.

Kaspersky tops real world protection test

Independent testing organisation AV-Comparatives has released the results of its real world protection test for March to June 2013. The tests use each security suite on its default settings and live URLs that point to malware executables along with drive-by exploits.

Using a total of 1,972 test cases over the four month period the results show that all of the major security packages offer high levels of protection. Bitdefender and Kaspersky top the charts with 99.9 percent protection levels, F-Secure also manages 99.9 but ranks slightly lower as it relied on user interaction to block three of the threats.

Kaspersky releases Anti-Virus 2014 and Internet Security 2014 tech previews

security hand

Kaspersky Lab has announced the public availability of Technical Previews for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. These are very early releases and some way from being complete, so there’s little information on new features yet – but a few basic details have appeared.

The interface has been updated, for instance. It’s not radically different, just simplified, and even more Windows 8-like than it was before. The new releases now support touch screens, too, and our initial impressions are that the program could work well in a touch environment. Kaspersky’s Safe Money (a feature which helps to secure your online transactions) now supports more banks and web stores, and allows you to choose your preferred browser.

For the first time ever, Microsoft is not a Kaspersky top-10 security vulnerability

remote access

Security researcher and software vendor Kaspersky Lab on Friday released its quarterly malware report for the third quarter of 2012, and for the first time in the history of the report, not a single Microsoft product had a vulnerability in the top ten vulnerabilities list.

Kaspersky says the automatic updates mechanism in recent versions of Windows has prevented exploits from getting out of hand by patching vulnerabilities quickly and quietly.

Kaspersky Lab is building 'unhackable' OS for industrial control systems

Eugene Kaspersky, co-founder of Russian security company Kaspersky Lab announced on Tuesday that his company is building its own operating system specifically for industrial control systems for critical infrastructure such as nuclear power and other energy supply companies, transportation control facilities, and financial and telecommunications systems.

With this work, Kaspersky is addressing deep-seated fears that a state-sponsored cyber weapon could take down a country's energy grid through its supervisory, control, and data acquisition (SCADA) networks. The subject has been a concern for more than a decade, and five years ago, a team of whitehat security experts made waves when they claimed to have taken down an industrial power grid in just one day through the old standard social engineering method.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 review

If you like your security suites to be hassle-free then Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 should impress you immediately. Installation was quick and easy, no complicated options to consider and the program was up and running in under a minute on our test PC.

The simplicity continues, at least for those familiar with the 2012 interface, because apart from a few minor tweaks the suite looks and feels very much the same: a clean and clear display keeps you to-to-date with current threats, update status, licence details and more, while a scrolling toolbar provides easy access to the program’s various modules.

State-sponsored 'Gauss' cyber-weapon targeted Lebanon, says Kaspersky

Security company Kaspersky Lab on Thursday announced it had discovered a malware called Gauss which ran from September 2011 to July 2012, and was similar in design to the notorious Flame worm. The company believes Gauss to have been another state-sponsored cyberweapon.

Kaspersky said Gauss was discovered because of the increased efforts to identify and halt international cyber-weapons in the wake of Flame, Stuxnet, Duqu, and other military-grade security threats.

Kaspersky tool detects and removes Flashback/Flashfake Trojan from Macs

If there’s one silver lining to the cloud cast over Mac users by the recent revelation that the Flashback/Flashfake Trojan has infected over 600,000 Macs worldwide, it’s surely the end to the myth that Macs are invulnerable to viruses and other malware. Seasoned Mac users will have never claimed anything different, but now there’s no excuse for any Mac users to run without protection of some form or other.

Of course, before you can bolt the barn door, you need to make sure no horses have escaped, which is where Kaspersky’s free Flashfake Removal Tool comes in. As the name implies, it’s designed to remove any specific Flashback/Flashfake infection from your Mac; it’ll quickly scan for infection, inform you of the result and then take steps, if necessary, to nullify the infection.

Little changes add lots to Kaspersky PURE 2.0 Total Security

Kaspersky LAB has released a new version of its flagship do-it-all security suite, PURE 2.0 Total Security.

Although the upgrade is relatively minor, which is no surprise, really; the previous version did so much that there isn’t much left to add, the company has made a few useful tweaks which should appeal to fans of the package.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 beta released, rough edges cut deep

Every year the top security companies fight to see who can be the first to get their next generation suites out to the public. Last year Symantec did well, revealing Internet Security 2012 in April 2011. But this year Kaspersky Lab is the clear victor, as today they’ve released the first beta of Kaspersky Internet Security 2013.

This isn’t anything like as polished as some of the betas we’ve seen, though. The interface isn’t finished, for instance, and the build has Application Verifier and trace logging turned on, which means it will slow your PC down considerably. You won’t want to leave the suite installed for long.

Kaspersky Lab teams up with VMware on virtualized security

Security solutions company Kaspersky Lab announced its first security product for virtual machines on Monday, appropriately named Kaspersky Security for Virtualization, which is meant to simplify the security management practices in a
network of virtual machines --especially ones running on VMware virtual infrastructure-- and integrate them with Kaspersky's endpoint security solutions.

Kaspersky Security for Virtualization is a centrally-managed virtual security appliance that integrates with VMware vShield Endpoint and Kaspersky Endpoint Security. With the anti-malware functions operating in a centralized virtual appliance, admins can intelligently deploy virtual and endpoint security alongside one another in a single admin console. This can eliminate the need for duplicated resources on each virtual machine and ultimately improve the overall performance.
