Attackers weaponize workplace communication to install remote access tools

An ongoing phishing campaign is targeting organizations across multiple industries, using
sophisticated social engineering tactics to convincingly impersonate well-known
videoconferencing platforms and deploy ConnectWise ScreenConnect for unauthorized remote
access
.

The research from Abnormal Intelligence reveals that unlike traditional credential-harvesting attacks that steal login information, this campaign deceives targets into downloading legitimate remote monitoring and management (RMM) software, granting cybercriminals complete control over end-user devices.

Microsoft is killing off the Remote Desktop app and replacing it with something with known limitations

Microsoft has announced that it is pulling the plug on the Remote Desktop app. In just 6 weeks, the app will not only no longer be supported, it will also not be available to download from the Microsoft Store.

But Microsoft is not completely abandoning people who need to be able to remotely access systems -- it is replacing the Remote Desktop app with the Windows App. While the company is quick to point out the extra things Windows App can do when compared to the Remote Desktop app, it concedes that it is not a replacement tool and there are limitations.

Microsoft announces deprecation of DirectAccess networking feature in favor of Always On VPN

Somewhat out of the blue, Microsoft has announced that DirectAccess is to be deprecated. This feature is used by remote workers to access company networks, but it has been superseded and is now considered outdated.

As is so often the case with the deprecation of Windows features, there is currently no precise timeline for removal, but Microsoft is advising users to make the move to Always On VPN. The company has also provided detailed instructions for how to migrate from DirectAccess to Always On VPN.
