VoIP phone offers WiMAX connectivity

Three companies are set to use the backdrop of the 2008 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to debut a device that can use WiMAX technology to make calls.

The device has been co-developed by Tokyo-based companies NetIndex and Kaga Electronics, and Israel company Runcom. The phone is fully complaint with WiMAX, and will provide full VoIP functionality.

Runcom provided the chipset for the WiMAX connectivity, while Runcom developed the communications module. Manufacturing was handled by Kaga. In addition to the VoIP functionality, it also includes data connectivity through web browsing.

"This product contains WiFi, and also is completely suited to business enterprises where the use of wireless solutions other than WiMAX such as 3G, PHS, and internal PHS is possible," the companies said in a statement.

While this phone appears to be directed more at the consumer subset, NetIndex and Kaga said they are looking into developing a mobile broadband phone for enterprise use. NetIndex also said they are looking into developing other products for next-generation high-speed wireless technologies.
