Amazon discontinues Dash buttons

Amazon Dash button

If you were among those who thought that Amazon Dash buttons -- little single-function, buttoned devices that enable you to order frequently bought items with a press -- were stupid, it seems that Amazon has come around to your way of thinking.

The company has decided -- sensibly, many would argue -- to discontinue the devices. While this means that you will no longer be able to buy Amazon Dash buttons, if you already have one or more of them, orders that are placed through them will still be honoured.

YouTube disables comments on videos of minors because of child predator fears

Childlike YouTube

Amid mounting fears about child predators and pedophile rings operating online, YouTube has announced that it is disabling comments on videos that feature minors.

For now, the efforts are focused on videos that feature young children, but in the coming months it will expand to include older minors that YouTube says "could be at risk of attracting predatory behavior". The site is also stepping up its use of algorithms to not only identify videos that contain children, but also to monitor and moderate comments.

Now you can buy a .dev domain for a sensible price

Google .dev TLD

Google recently launched the new top-level domain, .dev. When the TLD was introduced, pricing was a little out of the reach of most people -- there are few who would be willing to part with $11,000.

Now, however, pricing has dropped dramatically. The crazy pricing was only part of the Early Access registration period, but now the domain is available from a range of registrars for a far more reasonable $12-$15.

Mission Workshop 'Axis VX' is a modern and stylish fanny pack for your tech gear

Ah, the fanny pack -- one of the most controversial pieces of fashion. Many people decry this waist-worn bag as ugly and nerdy, but they are wrong. Actually, the fanny pack was just way ahead of its time. In the 1980s and 90s, people simply didn't have all the tech gear we do nowadays. In other words, its usefulness is more appropriate for modern times. How great would it feel to not have your phone charger, keys, wallet, flash drive, or battery bank stuffed into your overloaded pockets?

Today, a company named Mission Workshop launches a fanny pack for 2019. Called "Axis V," it is an upgrade to its previous generation product. This waist-worn bag can sit above either your buttocks or crotch -- you choose the position. You can also wear it to the side if you want. If you get tired of having it on your waist, it can also be slung over your shoulder -- it is very versatile.

Windscribe is a great VPN, and this is why you should be using it

Install the latest security software and most people would consider their system safe. Understandable as most modern suites cover almost every possible scenario from prevention against malicious software through to providing a secure way of interacting with your bank account.

There’s one area which is avoided and that’s a lack of a secure tunnel to the outside world and here’s the reason why this is so important.

2019 prediction #1 -- Apple under Tim Cook emulates GE under Jack Welch

People -- well, investors and financial analysts -- seem to worry a lot about Apple. They tend to see Apple as either wonderful or terrible, bound for further greatness or doomed. What Apple actually is is huge -- a super tanker of a company. And, like a super tanker, it’s hard to quickly change Apple’s direction or to make it go appreciably faster or slower. Those who see Apple as doomed, especially, should remember they are worrying about the most profitable enterprise in the modern history of business. Those who see Apple as immortal should remember that’s impossible.

The worry about Apple in 2019 seems to be that the smart phone market may have peaked, or maybe that Apple has made the mistake of building its products so well that they last too long. Then there’s the concern that Steve Jobs is gone and why isn’t Apple reinventing itself and the world yet again through another new product category?
