Samsung introduces the next generation of its folding phones -- Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4

Samsung’s folding phones didn’t get off to the most auspicious of starts, it's fair to say. The company was forced to postpone things after the first-generation Galaxy Fold models sent out to reviewers were found to be "problematic" and pre-orders in the US even had to be cancelled entirely, which was nothing short of disastrous. Samsung eventually fixed the problems and released the Fold, although problems remained.
Fortunately, the company kept the faith, and overcame the various issues to produce two excellent folding phones, and today the company rolls out its fourth generation foldables -- Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4.
Forget Microsoft's Surface Duo, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold2 is the foldable smartphone you want -- if you can afford it

The launch of the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s revolutionary folding smartphone, was nothing short of a disaster with the company being forced to postpone things after models sent out to reviewers were found to be "problematic" and in need of design improvements. Pre-orders in the US even had to be cancelled, which didn’t go down at all well.
Samsung eventually fixed the problems and released the Fold, although problems remained. Today the South Korean tech giant announces a completely re-engineered successor, the Galaxy Z Fold2.
TCL unveils trifold and rollable smartphones

Are foldable smartphones the future? Maybe. With that said, they certainly are not the present. True, you can currently buy a smartphone with a flexible display from companies like Huawei, Samsung, and Motorola, but they are still very much early-adopter products. In other words, they are not only very expensive, but also, they are rather fragile and full of compromises. And so, most consumers would be wise to wait a couple years until flexible display products start to mature a bit.
Many companies are planning foldable smartphones for the future -- including Apple, I'd predict. An iPhone that unfolds into an iPad would be quite the impressive device. For now, Apple is mum on that. Today, however, one company -- TCL -- is making its plans quite apparent by unveiling two new concept phones. One is a trifold variant with two hinges, while the other is even crazier -- it is rollable! Yes, TCL has designed a phone that gets larger by utilizing a flexible display that rolls and unrolls -- it looks to be quite genius, actually.
Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Flip in surprise Oscars 2020 ad

There is a resurgence of flip phones at the moment, but rather than old-school clamshells, we're talking about devices with foldable displays. Samsung has already launched the disastrous Galaxy Fold, but at last night's Oscars there was a surprise ad for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip.
The handset is due to be officially announced at tomorrow's Galaxy Unpacked event, but now we've been given a sneaky glimpse of what's to come. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will compete with the likes of the Motorola razr and Microsoft's Surface Duo.
Leak reveals images of upcoming foldable Motorola razr

Trusted leaker Evan Blass has shared images of the yet-to-be-released folding Motorola razr.
It is a few years since the pre-smartphone era Motorola RAZR (note the different capitalization) earned itself iconic status, and now the clamshell is due to make a comeback. The new version of the phone looks remarkably similar to the original, but there's a key difference: this time around it seems that it will feature a folding screen.
Teardown of 'alarmingly fragile' Samsung Galaxy Fold suggests 'screen replacements seem inevitable'

Back in April, teardown site iFixit took an in-depth look at the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Following complaints and intervention from Samsung, however, the teardown was removed from the site.
Now iFixit has taken a look at the redesigned Galaxy Fold and, while it found that things have improved since the first version, there is still cause for concern. As well as pointing out that there are plenty of points of entry for dirt, dust and other debris, iFixit also says: "You wouldn't even have to drop this thing to break it, meaning screen replacements seem inevitable, and that's a scary thought".
Samsung officially announces postponement of Galaxy Fold

Bringing to an end rumors and speculation, Samsung has officially announced that it is postponing the launch of its Galaxy Fold smart phone.
The $2,000 foldable phone was due to launch this week, but models sent out to some reviewers have proved problematic. Having already announced the delay of the phone in China, unconfirmed reports suggested a global postponement. Samsung has now confirmed this with an official statement.
Report: Samsung delays the launch of Galaxy Fold until at least May

Following the news that Samsung is postponing Galaxy Fold launch events in China this week, it now seems that the US release of the handset has been pushed back until at least May. This will come as little surprise to anyone who has been following new about the Galaxy Fold recently.
There have been numerous reports of Fold handsets that have been sent out to reviewers suffering with the hinged display, and it's looking rather like Samsung has decided it makes sense to hold back the launch until things have been properly investigated. UPDATE: Samsung has now confirmed the Galaxy Fold launch has been postponed.
Samsung Galaxy Fold launch delayed in China

Despite the hype and excitement surrounding the first batch of foldable smartphones, the image of the Samsung Galaxy Fold has been tarnished before the device has even launched. There have been numerous reports of serious problems with handsets sent out for review, and now Samsung has delayed the launch of the phone in China.
Two launch events were due to be held this week on Tuesday and Wednesday for the $2,000 phone, but these have been postponed. For now, it is just the Chinese launch events that are affected, and it is not clear if Samsung will also delay launch events in other countries.
Huawei's Mate X is a seriously impressive folding 5G smartphone... but you'd hope so for $2,600!

If you balked when the price of the Samsung Galaxy Fold was revealed ($1,980, in case you missed it), the price tag attached to the newly revealed Huawei Mate X may trigger heart failure. At $2,600, the 5G folding smartphone is, the words of Huawei's Richard Yu, "very expensive", but you will get a lot of phone for your money.
The Mate X is scheduled for release in the middle of the year, and it differs from the Samsung Galaxy Fold in an important way. While Samsung's offering opens up to reveal a large screen on the inside, Huawei has instead opted to wrap the foldable screen around the front and back using the unique Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge. In folded mode, this is a 6.6-inch smartphone; opened up, it is an 8-inch tablet. The price may be extraordinarily high, but you get some impressive hardware.
