Today, most organizations and individuals use Linux and the Linux kernel with a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This differs from how Linux was used in the past–for example, 20 years ago, many users would compile their kernel and modify it to fit their specific needs, architectures and use cases. This is no longer the case, as one-size-fits-all has become good enough. But, like anything in life, “good enough” is not the best you can get.

Enter: Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF). eBPF allows users to modify one-size-fits-all to fit their specific needs. While this was not impossible before, it was cumbersome and often unsecure.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions are being adopted across every industry today. Quite often, these initiatives involve deploying ML models into operational settings where the model output ends up being a widget on the screens or a number on the reports that are put in front of hundreds, if not thousands, of front-line employees. These could be underwriters, loan officers, fraud investigators, nurses, teachers, claims adjusters, or attorneys. No industry is immune to these transformations.

These initiatives are typically driven from the top down. Management monitors and looks for ways to improve KPIs, and increasingly, AI/ML initiatives are identified as a means to this end. Certainly, there’s plenty of communication among executive, finance, data science, and operational leaders about these initiatives. Unfortunately, in many of the organizations I’ve worked with, the group of folks who are most commonly left out of the discussion are the front-line employees.

If you uninstalled the recently released KB5036979 update for Windows 10, you may have experienced unwanted Open With dialogs appearing. While first spotted in Outlook for Windows, Snip & Sketch, and Teams, the problem affects other apps as well.

While there is not yet a fix for this irritating, semi-random pop up, Microsoft has acknowledged the issue. The company is working on a patch for the bug, and offers up some insight and advice in the meantime.

Developers working on the PowerToys collection of utilities have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline for eager users. Building on the New entry in the Windows content menu, New+ is a module that, in the words of its main developer, Christian Gaardmark, "enables users to create files and folders from a personalized set of templates".

As there are already numerous third party utilities that extend the capabilities of the New menu, there is clearly an appetite for the likes of New+. It's aimed at Windows power-users, developers and, over time, also regular users who find themselves often creating files or folders that contain similar content, such as VS Code development projects, job applications and cover letters, scripts, etc and it already looks incredibly intriguing.

Apple announced today an extensive expansion of its educational offerings, introducing a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum for all Apple Developer Academy students and mentors. Starting this fall, the program will be accessible to learners across 18 academies in six countries, including Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States.

On June 25th, Backbone will release a new version of its Backbone One controller: a limited edition collaboration with hip-hop star Post Malone. This partnership is part of a growing trend of music and gaming industries coming together.

Enterprise IT and operations leaders are planning to significantly increase their AI investments over the next 18 months, according to an independent global survey announced today by Celigo.

The survey of 1,200 people finds businesses are realizing positive results from early AI deployments, including greater productivity and efficiency, enhanced customer experience and reduced costs. Consequently 97 percent say they will increase their AI expenditure through 2025 to accelerate AI transformations across corporate departments.

Almost 87 percent of respondents to a new survey report an increase in online fraud in the year to April 2024. Just 1.19 percent of respondents saying they experience zero fraudulent IDV (identity and verification) attempts in a month.

The report from Veriff also finds that more than 86 percent of decision-makers say their customers are now more demanding of robust fraud prevention capabilities. This reflects the findings in Veriff's 2024 Fraud Index which found more than 75 percent of consumers consider a company's record on fraud prevention before signing up for a service.

A new study reveals that 95 percent of respondents have experienced security problems in production APIs, with 23 percent suffering breaches as a result of API security inadequacies.

macOS and iOS have showed an increased exploitation rate of seven percent and eight percent, respectively. Although macOS reduced its total vulnerability by 29 percent from 2023 to 2022, exploited vulnerabilities have increased by over 30 percent.

This is among the findings of the Software Vulnerability Ratings Report from Action1 Corporation which offers insights into vulnerability trends within commonly used enterprise software categories, focusing on exploitation rate and Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerabilities.

A new survey of over 1,000 Security and IT leaders across Australia, France, Germany, Singapore, UK, and the USA, shows a decline in detection and response capabilities year-on-year.

The Hybrid Cloud Security Report from Gigamon shows that as hybrid cloud environments grow in complexity and threat actors launch a barrage of concealed attacks, 65 percent of respondents believe their existing security tooling cannot effectively detect breaches.
