Vaccination mandates, productivity uncertainty and how to operationalize eligibility

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the demand for employees to return to the workplace, the United States Department of Labor is acting on an executive order from the Biden administration which requires all companies with more than 100 employees to issue vaccination passports or agree to frequent COVID testing, as a part of their day-to-day business activities.
There is a workforce divide as to how vaccine mandates will be implemented across managers and employees. As it stands, and according to a recent study, only 30 percent of executives feel that their businesses should implement some level of vaccine mandate. This may be mainly down to anti-vaccination sentiment, which has caused issues throughout the economy and its workforce.

It's beginning to look a lot like a cyberattack -- demands of the job hit CISOs' private lives

Two in five CISOs have missed holidays like Thanksgiving due to work demands and a quarter haven't taken time off work in the past 12 months.
A new report from Tessian based on a study of 300 CISOs also shows that they work, on average, 11 more hours than they're contracted to each week while one in 10 works 20 to 24 hours extra a week.
IT leaders want to move from mainframe to cloud

A new survey of 650 IT leaders around the world shows that while 96 percent consider their organization's mainframe applications as important or critical to business operations, 98 percent would consider migrating off the platform.
The preferred destination for these apps is the cloud, with 82 percent of respondents saying they would use public and/or hybrid cloud deployment models if they were to move their organization's applications off the mainframe.
How to enable the Windows 11 look in Chrome 96

Google has launched Chrome 96, and the latest version of the search giant's web browser is making its way to users around the world.
Visually not much has changed, although there are lots of improvements and additions to be found elsewhere. However, by tweaking a hidden setting it is possible to change the look of Chrome so that it uses Windows 11's menus, complete with rounded corners and drop shadow effects -- and this even works in Windows 10.
Microsoft is dropping x64 emulation from Windows 10 on ARM, making it exclusive to Windows 11

Back in December last year, Microsoft launched a preview of x64 emulation for Windows on ARM. The emulator makes it possible to run x64 apps on ARM devices, and at the time it was available to Windows 10 on ARM users.
But Microsoft has had a change of heart which means Windows 11 on ARM is needed for 64-bit Intel app emulation.
Turtle Beach announces Bumblebee II USB-C mic from Neat Microphones

If you want to be a world-famous YouTube creator, Twitch streamer, or podcaster, you must have a great personality. With so many people creating content, you should have a way to stand out from the crowd too. For most creators, it will never become more than a hobby -- earning a living from these platforms is highly unlikely.
With all of that said, you should also buy good hardware. For instance, if I discover an interesting streamer on Twitch, I won't bother subscribing if it is difficult to hear them speak -- a good microphone is absolutely essential. Thankfully, quality gear doesn't have to break the bank. For instance, today, Turtle Beach unveils the latest mic from its Neat Microphones subsidiary. Called "Bumblebee II," it is an affordable USB-C mic that comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable in the box.
Microsoft releases Windows 11 Build 22504 with emoji updates

Yesterday was a busy day for Microsoft. The software giant made the new Media Player for Windows 11 available to Insiders on the Dev Channel, and then began the official rollout of the Windows 10 November Update (21H2).
Today the company follows that up with a new Windows 11 build for Dev Channel Insiders.
Apple Self Service Repair makes fixing an iPhone on your own easier... sort of

If your iPhone needs repair, you should probably bring it to the Apple Store to get it fixed, right? Well, maybe. I recently brought my iPhone 8 Plus to that store for a battery replacement, and the Apple "genius" accidentally broke my phone entirely! Yeah, they did the right thing and replaced it with a working iPhone 8 Plus, but still, it was a massive hassle to restore everything.
Of course, if I was able to replace the battery myself, I probably would have done that instead. I am no expert though, and I would probably not be happy with the results. Plus, Apple has historically frowned upon consumers doing repairs on their own.
Why a career in cybersecurity is more exciting than you might think

Back in 2019, I wrote an article about the talent shortfall in technology and cybersecurity. Unfortunately, since the pandemic and because of Brexit, that gap, particularly here in the UK, has only widened. As of 2021, the global talent shortage already amounts to40 million skilled workers worldwide. By 2030, the global talent shortage is predicted to reach 85.2 million workers.
This means that companies worldwide risk losing $8.4 trillion in revenue because of the lack of skilled talent. This gap is keenly felt in security and again there is currently a shortage of 350,000+ cybersecurity specialists in Europe alone.
Organizations want secure multi-cloud but aren't putting in sufficient resources

A new survey of more than 200 IT leaders in the US finds that 95 percent of businesses are making multi-cloud a strategic priority in 2022 with security being top of mind.
However, only 54 percent feel highly confident that they have the tools or skills they need to execute the strategy. In fact, when it comes to multi-cloud operations in general, 76 percent of respondents believe it is 'under-invested' at their respective companies.
Intel audio drivers are causing blue screens and errors in Windows 11

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue with compatibility between Windows 11 and audio drivers from Intel.
Some versions of Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) drivers are causing BSoDs, leading to Microsoft placing a compatibility hold on systems with affected hardware. This means that until the issue is addressed by either Microsoft or Intel, such systems will not be able to upgrade to Windows 11.
Who needs a CISO anyway?

New research from cloud services provider Navisite finds that 45 percent of companies do not employ a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). However, of this group 58 percent think they should have one.
Only 40 percent of respondents say their cybersecurity strategy was developed by a CISO or member of the security team, with 60 percent relying on other parts of their organization, including IT, executive leadership and compliance.
How effective communication can boost the IT team's effectiveness [Q&A]

One of the keys to the success of an IT team is the ability to communicate both within and outside the team, something that is as important as talent or knowledge.
But for this to work buy-in from executives and business managers is essential to ensure IT managers can achieve their department goals.
