Data-driven tools prove key to business growth

Data and analytics are instrumental to helping organizations successfully solve problems and 84 percent of organizations have either already deployed or have data-driven projects on their roadmaps.
A new study from Foundry shows data-driven projects continue to accelerate as 34 percent of organizations state that they have already deployed or implemented them compared to 28 percent of organizations saying the same in 2021.
Three steps to turn data into an indispensable strategic tool

While 'data is the new oil' has become something of a cliché, it's undeniably true. Gartner reports that 90 percent of corporate strategies will explicitly class information as a critical enterprise asset by the end of 2022. Yet, information can only be powerful when it is put to work. Which is why the UK government and industry regulators (such as Ofwat) have set out strategies that encourage organizations to put data to use.
However, making data usable isn't always straightforward. Data doesn't come pre-packaged into customer next best actions and strategic tips. In fact, data analysis is often compared to panning for gold. Not all data is useful and you need to connect the dots to make it relevant -- when you consider the volume of data managed by the average company has grown to 162.9TB, that's one big river to pan.
Adopting big data for business intelligence

It’s hardly contested nowadays that business intelligence is beneficial to any organization, regardless of industry. Data optimization and governance have been shown to produce better decision-making in the long-term.
That doesn’t mean data implementations have been perfect. Some companies have been failing efforts to become data-driven at a much larger scale than one would expect. Others, however, are rushing ahead and have begun using external data sources en masse.
Data team productivity threatens project success

Although 81 percent of respondents to a new survey say that their data team's overall productivity has improved in the last 12 months, 95 percent of teams are still at or over their capacity.
The study of over 500 US-based data scientists, data engineers, data analysts, enterprise architects and chief data officers by Ascend.io finds automation is emerging as the most promising path to increase data team capacity and productivity.
Enterprises look to unlock the power of data through full-stack observability

Following two years of rapid digital transformation and firefighting in response to the pandemic, enterprises are primed to drive the next critical wave of innovation according to a new report from Cisco AppDynamics.
The study of 1,200 technologists worldwide finds that appetite for full-stack observability has markedly increased over the past year, with 85 percent saying 2022 will be pivotal for their organization on the journey to unlock the power of data in an application-driven world.
99 percent of enterprises struggle to deliver relevant search results

Companies are more than ever reliant on data, but siloed search deployments and a lack of organizational alignment on a strategy are among factors preventing truly relevant enterprise search results, according to a new study.
A survey conducted by Dimensional Research for Coveo Solutions shows that despite an increased investment in search over the past year by 85 percent of IT professionals, 99 percent of organizations still struggle to deliver relevant search results to their users.
Why real-time analysis is key to making better use of data [Q&A]

Businesses of all types generate ever larger quantities of data, but while this should be an invaluable resource to drive decision making the sheer volume can create difficulties.
Analyzing data in real time is the ideal but it can be surprisingly hard to achieve. We talked to Ariel Assaraf, CEO of data streaming specialist Coralogix, to find out how enterprises can face the challenges posed by real-time analysis.
The importance of a modern approach to information management [Q&A]

Information is now a critical asset for businesses, but it's only of real value if you can manage and access it efficiently.
More and more data now is in an unstructured form too, so has the way we manage information changed, and what do businesses need to do to make the most of it to inform their day-to-day decisions? We spoke to Antti Nivala, founder and CEO of M-Files to find out.
Data strategy isn't understood in two-thirds of companies

Research from data science consultancy Mango Solutions shows that while 95 percent of companies questioned have a data strategy, less than a third of those (29 percent), claim their data strategy is clear and widely understood.
The survey, of over 100 data professionals at the Big Data LDN event in September, reveals companies are investing heavily in data capabilities, resulting in maturing data functions -- for example, 41 percent have established data science functions in the last two years.
New storage solution cuts data costs and keeps organizations in control

As the quantity of unstructured data generated globally continues to grow exponentially, the storage needed to cope with it needs to grow too and that adds to cost.
What's more much of this data will be 'cold' -- inactive data that must be stored, protected, and kept accessible for years or decades because of compliance requirements or the value it contains.
Why big data warehousing is the next frontier for boosting CX

It’s been decades since the term "the customer is always right" placed customer experience (CX) at the heart of every transaction, but delivering excellence in CX hasn’t become much simpler with the passage of time.
Customers effectively expect businesses to read their minds, and they don’t have much patience for those that fail. A recent PWC survey concluded that one-third of consumers would abandon a brand they love after just one negative experience, showing just how high the bar is set for CX.
Data warehouses not delivering return on investment

A report from Dremio, based on a study by Wakefield Research, shows only 22 percent of data leaders have fully realized their return on data warehouse investment in the past two years, with most (56 percent) having no consistent way of measuring it.
Another startling finding is that in order to run analytics, enterprises are making multiple copies of their data -- 12 on average -- with 60 percent reporting that their company has over 10 copies of their data floating around.
How streaming can help developers improve their handling of data [Q&A]

Data is increasingly important to companies, but making effective use of it presents a number of challenges.
NoSQL database company DataStax has recently launched its new Astra Streaming service. Based on Apache Pulsar this aims to make it easier for developers who want to run their application streaming alongside their database instances like Cassandra.
IBM CodeFlare simplifies the move to hybrid cloud

Enterprises are relying on data more than ever before, but that can come at a cost in terms of the time spent on building and managing the infrastructure to handle it.
In order to streamline the integration and efficient scaling of these big data and AI workflows into hybrid cloud environments, IBM Research is launching CodeFlare.
Facing the business challenge of open data [Q&A]

We're all familiar with the term 'big data' but not perhaps with 'open data'. Open data is information that can be freely reused and distributed, it's often linked with mixing datasets too.
But what challenges does dealing with open data present for enterprises? We spoke to Mo Ladha, product manager at content services platform Hyland, to find out.
