Remote desktop problems? Guess what? It’s probably because of another flaky update for Windows

Microsoft is, once again, using a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) to resolve a problem caused by yet another dodgy update for Windows. This time around, the issue sees Remote Desktop disconnecting and there is not yet a fix.

Just as with the recently fixed printer problems, the Remote Desktop issues are being caused by the January 2025 Windows preview update, but it is something that seems have been exacerbated by the March 2025 Windows security update.

Microsoft is killing off the Remote Desktop app and replacing it with something with known limitations

Microsoft has announced that it is pulling the plug on the Remote Desktop app. In just 6 weeks, the app will not only no longer be supported, it will also not be available to download from the Microsoft Store.

But Microsoft is not completely abandoning people who need to be able to remotely access systems -- it is replacing the Remote Desktop app with the Windows App. While the company is quick to point out the extra things Windows App can do when compared to the Remote Desktop app, it concedes that it is not a replacement tool and there are limitations.

Manjaro has officially launched its latest release, Xahea 24.1, following its previous Wynsdey version from May 2024. This new version brings updates across its popular GNOME, Plasma, and XFCE editions, offering users more refined desktop experiences.

Microsoft launches Windows App so you can connect to Windows from just about any device

After a lengthy period of testing, Microsoft has announced that the Windows App is now generally available for Windows, macOS and iOS. There is also a browser-based version as well as a preview version of the Android app.

What is Windows App? It provides a way to remotely connect to and control a range of Windows devices. It is, in many ways, a modernization and revamp of Remote Desktop clients, and users will be gradually migrated so they can take advantage of the latest improvements and features. So, what is new?

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is the remote desktop tool most targeted by attacks, accounting for 98 percent of the traffic across all remote desktop-specific ports.

New research from Malwarebytes reveals that employees are being tricked into downloading remote monitoring and management tools like AnyDesk to open up back doors to corporate networks.

In a standard phishing technique potential victims are targeted via an email or SMS message, personalized to match their roles within the organization. The link in the email goes to what looks like a legitimate bank website with a link to open a chat support session.

Number of new Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) expected to increase in 2023

We can expect to see more than 1,900 new Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) per month in 2023, including 270 high-severity and 155 critical-severity vulnerabilities -- a 13 percent increase from published 2022 levels.

This is according to a report from cyber insurance provider Coalition, which finds that most CVEs are exploited within 90 days of public disclosure, with the majority exploited within the first 30 days.

Microsoft confirms Remote Desktop Connection problem with Windows 11 22H2

The known issues with Windows 11 22H2 keep on coming thick and fast. Microsoft may want to move all Windows 10 users onto Windows 11, but the constant stream of problems is enough to put off just about anyone.

Now the company has confirmed yet another issue with the latest update to the operating system. Warning that "Connections may fail when using Remote Desktop Connection Brokers", Microsoft offers a workaround -- but not a fix -- for those affected.

Windows 11 2022 Update is causing Remote Desktop problems

If you have upgraded to Windows 11 2022 Update and found that you are having issues connecting to Remote Desktop, you will be pleased to hear that Microsoft is aware of the problems and is currently investigating.

There has been no official acknowledgement that Windows 11 22H2 is the cause of Remote Desktop issues, but a Microsoft employee has noted the issue and is interacting with affected users in the company's Community forums.
