Moving applications to the cloud and distributing work to remote offices places new strains on networks. According to Microsoft's guidelines for Office 365 adoption, enterprises should plan for up to four times increase in WAN bandwidth, and enable direct-to-cloud access from the remote office to avoid sub-optimal performance.

Software-defined WAN pioneer CloudGenix is addressing this problem with the launch of its Instant On (ION) 3000v application-defined fabric, an SD-WAN platform for virtualizing remote offices.

Next year will be the tipping point for flexible and remote working in the UK, with more than 50 percent of businesses adopting it by the end of next year. That number will grow even more, to 70 percent, by the time we get to 2020.

Those are the results of a new survey produced by Lancaster University’s Work Foundation, and commissioned by Citrix. The survey, entitled Working anywhere: A winning formula for good work?, asked 500 employees at a managerial level about the pros and cons of flexible working.

Stack Overflow has published a report that found nearly half of developers (44 percent) value the opportunity to work remotely. It’s well known that developers value the perk of remote working, but these days geographically disparate teams can be found in all sectors.

Companies with a remote workforce are among some of the most successful in the world -- WordPress, AirBnB, and Buzzfeed allow at least 50 percent of their workforce to operate remotely. For a decade or so, remote working has been for most an aspiration rather than a reality, and despite the availability of fast internet, laptops and smartphones, it’s never become the norm for most businesses and employees.
