Google Image Search gets fashion-conscious with 'style ideas' on Android and the web
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Google is entirely pre-occupied with fake news and the fact-checking thereof these days, but there are still rather more interesting changes and additions being made to search. The latest new feature is "style ideas" which makes its way to the web and Android today.
Google says that the aim of the feature is to help "boost your search style IQ" -- because, after all, "when it comes to fashion, it’s hard to know where to start." What this means in practice is that when Image Search is used to track down a particular product, such as shoes or a bag, Google will show off images with those items paired with different products or displayed in different situations.
On the face of it, this may not seem like a major feature, but it's one that certainly has potential -- particularly with people to whom style does not come easily. Can't decide what color tie to pair with that shirt? Guess no more!
Google says:
With style ideas, you can see real-life options of what bag and jeans look stellar with those red high heels you've been eyeing. Or if running gear is more your speed, no sweat -- workout ensemble ideas are just a tap away.
As an added bonus, you'll also see an expanded carousel for "similar items" while searching for apparel products. That means whether you're researching shorts and sneakers or checking out sunglasses and handbags, you'll be able to find product offerings that may suit your tastes. Uncovering a bargain option without sacrificing style is now accessible right from Image Search.
For now, Google has only made mention of the web and Android versions of Image Search; it's not clear when, or indeed if, the feature will be coming to iOS users.
