From big data pilot to production

According to Gartner, more than half of all big data projects fail to make it beyond the pilot stage. It’s important to consider what it takes to make big data projects successful in a production environment and to ensure you’re building in the right elements from the outset to support your big data initiatives.
If you’ve had a successful pilot, it’s a good time to step back and generalize and reexamine any expedient choices you may have made. And if you’re not yet to the pilot stage, even better -- you can build your pilot on sound principles and a proven approach, which will make the project go faster.
Three ways you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free

Windows 10 was free for an entire year, and Microsoft nagged users to upgrade to the new OS almost constantly during that period. Yet, despite this, it seems there are plenty of people looking for ways to get Windows 10 for free now it’s a paid product. Go figure.
As it happens, there are still ways to legally get Windows 10 without paying, so if you’ve decided you do want to upgrade after all, here are some methods to try.
New solution lets enterprises transfer sensitive data securely

Businesses in industries like healthcare, financial services, insurance, retail and government hold sensitive data and need to be able to keep it safe at all times.
Compliance with regulations like PCI and HIPAA often requires new layers of security between the public internet and protected data. Network management software company Ipswitch is tackling this with the launch of Ipswitch MOVEit 2016.
HTTP/2 has four huge security vulnerabilities

The HTTP/2 standard was approved some time ago, but it is yet to be widely adopted. Before the standard can become widespread, however, there are four serious vulnerabilities that need to be addressed.
The high-profile issues were revealed at Black Hat USA 2016 by Imperva researchers. They found that exploits similar to those that work on HTTP/1.x also work on the HTTP/2 protocol. The problems specifically affect server implementations from Apache, Microsoft, NGINX, Jetty, and nghttp2, but it is likely that other implementations are also at risk.

Microsoft uses data gathered from telemetry to reduce Windows 10 Anniversary Update rollback period

If you've upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you only have 10 days in which to roll back to your previous operating system if you change your mind. This is a dramatic reduction from the 30 days Microsoft allowed users previously.
As noted by Richard Hay on WinSuperSite, the latest big update to Windows 10 slashes this period by two thirds. This is not just an arbitrary change, however. Microsoft says it is based on data gathered via telemetry.

Ransomware makes up half of all malware

Ransomware is no longer a quick and easy way for cyber-criminals to get their hands on some money. It is now considered a "permanent fixture on the threat landscape" -- at least according to PhishMe’s Q2 2016 Malware Review.
The security experts’ new report says ransomware now accounts for 50 percent of all malware configurations, meaning it is now a mature business model. It also says it shows no outward signs of diminishing.

Warning: Windows 10 Anniversary Update might delete your Linux partitions

Many people know that I am a Linux proponent. With that said, I am not a stereotypical Microsoft hater. While I regularly use operating systems like Ubuntu, Fedora, and Chrome OS, I also use Windows 10. Truth be told, I actually love the newest Microsoft desktop operating system -- Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
Folks like me that use both Linux and Windows will often setup multiple partitions on a single drive or across multiple drives. This method allows you to easily choose between various operating systems at boot. Unfortunately, there are apparently reports that upgrading to Windows 10 Anniversary Update could delete all Linux partitions in the process. Scary!

Microsoft to close free Windows 10 upgrade loophole

Free upgrades to Windows 10 officially came to an end on 29 July, but there are ways to continue upgrading without purchasing a license. The easiest method is to take advantage of a scheme that Microsoft has in place for users of assistive technologies.
As detailed here, Microsoft created a web page that allows users with accessibility needs to continue to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, but because it doesn’t require users to prove they use assistive technologies, anyone can take advantage of the free extension.
