The economic downturn of 2022 hasn’t stopped the tech industry from engaging in merger and acquisition activity. Though deals have decreased by 40 percent in the first half of 2022, several firms and solution providers have negotiated pacts of up to billions of dollars.
Most of the acquisition activity is because of the overall decline in the stock market. When prices plunge and company valuations reduce, firms step in to bargain.
Netflix finally announces its cheaper subscription -- Basic with Ads
It has been a very, very long time coming, but a cheaper Netflix subscription tier, complete with ads, arrives next month.
The new ad-supported plan is called Basic with Ads, and will cost $6.99 per month when it launches in the US on November 3. Netflix says that the cheaper tier will be available in 11 other countries, and shares details of the limitations subscribers will have to put up with, including the fact that some shows and movies simply will not be available if you're not paying for a more expensive ad-free Basic, Standard or Premium plan.

New ransomware groups emerge but overall activity slows
Research from GuidePoint Security shows eight new ransomware groups have emerged in the last quarter and that there has been at least one new ransomware group each month since January 2021.
The report, from the GuidePoint Research and Intelligence Team (GRIT), tracked 27 ransomware groups and 568 publicly posted victims in the third quarter of this year and shows a slight slowdown overall of ransomware activity from the previous quarter.
Microsoft launches new security update notification RSS feed
RSS feeds may not be as popular as they used to be, but for some things they are one of the most efficient and useful means of keeping updated.
Microsoft is aware of this and, having listened to feedback from customers, has launched a new RSS feed to make it easier to keep updated about the latest security notifications from the company. Specifically, there is now an RSS feed for the Security Update Guide (SUG).

Microsoft is updating Snipping Tool to bring a proper screen recorder to Windows 11

Capturing a screenshot is incredibly simple thanks to the existence of the Print Screen key, but with the arrival of the Snipping Tool, Microsoft expanded the range of options available without the need for additional software. And next, the company is expanding the capabilities of Snipping Tool so that it can be used as a screen recorder, not just a screen capture utility.
Older generations are less likely to click phishing emails
Digital natives aged between 18-39 are the most vulnerable age group for phishing scams, according to new data from security awareness training company SoSafe.
It finds that 18-39 year-olds have an average click rate of 29 percent on phishing emails, which drops to 19 percent among older age groups.

Corsair lists Windows and Mac compatibility, but it should work perfectly fine with Linux-based operating systems too, including Ubuntu, Chrome OS, and Android. Yes, it should be compatible with iPadOS as well.
Microsoft's Surface Laptop 5 is faster, but that's about it
Earlier today, Microsoft unveiled the latest model in its Surface Pro range, the Surface Pro 9.
The company also debuted a new model of its Surface Laptop. The upgraded device comes with the latest 12th Gen Intel Core i5/i7 processor and Thunderbolt 4 and is now verified as an Intel Evo device, which Microsoft says means it’s over 50 percent more powerful than its predecessor. There's no AMD option this time around, unfortunately.
