AI use leads to new risks for data security

According to a new study, 89 percent of cybersecurity professionals agree that their company's sensitive data is increasingly vulnerable to new AI technologies.

The study of 700 respondents across cybersecurity roles, conducted by Vanson Bourne for Code42, also finds that 87 percent are concerned their employees may inadvertently expose sensitive data to competitors by inputting it into GenAI. In addition 87 percent are concerned their employees are not following their GenAI policy.

Google unveils Gemma: A new generation of open AI models for responsible development

Today, Google launches Gemma -- a new family of open AI models designed to help developers and researchers build responsible AI applications. Developed by Google DeepMind and other teams across Google, Gemma models are built on the same technology as the Gemini models.

Gemma models are available in two sizes: Gemma 2B and Gemma 7B, each with pre-trained and instruction-tuned variants. Google is also releasing a Responsible Generative AI Toolkit to guide the creation of safer AI applications. The toolkit includes a safety classification methodology, a model debugging tool, and best practices for model builders.

Over half of gen AI inputs contain PII and sensitive data

In a new report on the impact of generative AI on security posture, Menlo Security looks at employee usage of gen AI and the subsequent security risks these behaviors pose to organizations.

It finds that 55 percent of data loss prevention events detected by Menlo Security in the last thirty days included attempts to input personally identifiable information. The next most common type of data that triggered DLP detections included confidential documents, which represented 40 percent of input attempts.

Privacy fears lead enterprises to ban GenAI use

New research reveals that that most organizations are limiting the use of generative AI over data privacy and security issues, and 27 percent have banned its use, at least temporarily.

The study from Cisco surveyed 2,600 privacy and security professionals and finds that among concerns cited are threats to an organization's legal and Intellectual Property rights (69 percent), and the risk of disclosure of information to the public or competitors (68 percent).
